PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN : DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (2017)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (2017)

Out of all the movies that hit the theater in the summer of 2017, this one probably had the least fan fair. ON STRANGER TIDES which did over $1 billion at the box office it seemed a lot more likely we’d get a "right now" 5th installment to the series, rather than a 6-year wait. Still, I was super excited to get back on the ship and take this ride. There are no disappointments here, in spite of what the conglomerate critics at Rotten Tomatoes, are telling fans.

Jack Sparrow returns once again in this one but I think story-wise, Disney may be trying to get away from centering the adventure around him due to Depp's rumored personal issues. This time around, we end up following the quest of Carina Smith (played by Kaya Scodelario most noted for THE MAZE RUNNER series) and Henry Turner  (played by Brenton Thwaites who will end up being most noted for playing Nightwing on the tv series “Titans”) for the most part. Jack ends up as more of a side character and the reason for our vengeful villain to surface.

DEAD MEN succeeds in a lot of places the previous films did not. This movie has heart, vivid creativity that isn’t just there to be kinda gross, and the best villain in the series by far, aptly played by Javier Bardem whose creepy factor on screen is often taken to nightmarish levels. As in all the films in this series, it might be a bit too bogged down with detail and dialog at times, so that is my only issue with this thing.

I don’t want to give away too much if you haven’t taken the time to catch this one, but for an amazing ride and a return to the best of the high seas….DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is a movie worth the stream, BLU-RAY, or DVD. I give this one a 5 out of 7.
