THE MUMMY (2017)
Just have to get this off my chest. Do not believe the “bomb”
hype surrounding this movie. It hasn’t even dropped on DVD and BLU RAY and it’s
already, as of this review $21 MILLION short of PACIFIC RIM’s entire box office
haul. PACIFIC RIM is getting (and deservedly) a second installment and there is
no reason Universal’s planned “DARK UNIVERSE” shouldn’t be able to come out
swinging with their next installment in the series.
The movie starts out with a quick accidental discovery of an ancient Egyptian prison. It’s in a giant hole, it’s creepy as all get out and it’s got a giant metaphorical sign on it saying “don’t screw with this”. What does our main character (Tom Cruise) do? If you saw the previews you don’t have to guess. From then on we have a very well-paced, “Ahmanet and her mummies will shrivel your face off” romp of mayhem and desperation. While I am not crazy about Annabelle Wallis (who played Jenny) the films cast is nothing short of stellar right down to the comedic back up Jake Johnson (JURASSIC WORLD). Russell Crowe might be a real life jerk but he can act and Sofia Boutella as Ahmanet was confidently convincing.
The story line I am going to have to give a thumbs up (and it’s actually better than the Frasier’s “THE MUMMY” movie in that regard), however it definitely is not quite as whimsical. If you were looking for that, exit stage left. There are parts of this movie that feel a little more “small world” than the grand scale the previews might have lead you to believe you were in for. To that end it doesn’t quite hit the “holy crap we are all going to die” note I was expecting. Overall however this thing is just loaded with great concept after great concept and modernizes the monster genre making me just want more of Universal’s grand plan. Don’t let the numbers or critics fool you. This movie deserves a place in your home collection. THE MUMMY was really close to a 6 for me, but for now I am giving it a solid 5.
