FRIDAY THE 13th A NEW BEGINNING (1985)

FRIDAY THE 13th A NEW BEGINNING  (1985)

Tagline: If Jason still haunts you, you're not alone.

(Horror, Mystery, You Scared Of The Dark?) [R]

Jason Voorhees is dead! His body was cremated. He's nothing but a handful of ash.

Oh boy… where to start with this thing. I gave the 4th installment in the FRIDAY THE 13TH series a solid 5 out of 7 and honestly, that thing was one of the top 4 flicks in this classic series. For some freakin reason, the writers down and horror headquarters decided they needed to re-launch the FRIDAY THE 13TH series at least as far as the title goes, and the result was well --- not as bad as we first thought.

I think when I first saw this one I was very un-impressed with the lack of continuity here, just in the sense that things are not what they seem, but overall this is a solid entry just a bit off the beaten path. I won’t give too much away in this review, but the setting is the halfway house that Tommy was sent to in order to get his crap together (by the way, it's not Corey Feldman in the role which knocks this one down a bit). It does not take long before murders are taking place once again and Tommy being the crazed bad a-s he is, is not going to take it lying down.

One of the strong points in this movie is the characters which in a way remind me a lot of what we got in NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET: DREAM WARRIORS. They are not as powerful, but the writers did take some time to get us to like them. The number of deaths in this one is pretty high even for a FRIDAY THE 13TH flick and overall the ending is pretty decent. This movie also features either the first or second most goofy dance moves in the entire series.

As many good things as there are about this one, it does have its problems. One of those problems is, that this entry isn’t an intricate part of the series. In fact, you could easily just skip this thing and go straight to JASON LIVES and not have a single issue. Another problem is that by the time we get to JASON LIVES, we've got our 3rd different actor playing Tommy. This isn't as horrifying as the 4 different sets of kids we get playing the Brody Sons in the JAWS series, but it's pretty annoying.

Due to some of the characters being more memorable and the decent dialog, I give this one a  4 out of 7. I will say that the more you watch this one, the more you tend to like it. It grows on you.
