DRACULA (1992)

DRACULA (1992)

Tagline: Love Never Dies

(Horror, Drama, Mina's Got It Bad) [R]

Yeah, she was in great pain! Then we cut off her head, and drove a stake through her heart, and burned it, and then she found peace.

Before all the telling and re-telling of the origins of DRACULA and the re-vamping of vamps, Francis Ford Coppola (director of APOCALYPSE NOW and the GODFATHER series) decided to show us something a little closer to the cuff. What was got as a star-driven masterpiece that pretty much every other serious vampire flick tries to live up to.

That is not to say the film doesn’t have its issues like being too freakin long and focusing way too much on the love story. I think they could have cut about 30 minutes out of this thing and gotten the same points across. Much like DRACULA UNTOLD, there is an effort here to get us to sympathize with DRACULA’s plight even though he basically rapes and kills people in his spare time.

Coppola goes out of his way to make sure we see just tons of blood in this one and definitely makes it as sexually charged as he could get away with. While not overly scary, just about everything in this movie is done on a high-quality level including the strong sets, acting, and overall feel.

I can’t really suggest this for a horror movie marathon because it’s just too long (2 hours and 8 minutes) but this is definitely a must-see for fans of vampire films in general. The opening scene by the way is pretty freakin over the top. I give this one a 6 out of 7.
