DAY OF THE DEAD (1985)

DAY OF THE DEAD (1985)

Tagline - Prepare yourself for the darkest day of horror the world has ever known!

I get that this thing is a cult classic and has somehow won over zombie fans worldwide, but I have seen over a 50 zombie movies now and I have to say this one for me, is one of stupidest. Normally I can spot a cult classic long before it reaches that status but nothing about this movie to me reaches the love a lot of fans have for it. I would even venture to say that there will be better zombie flicks I find by accident in the next month or two that will be better than this.

The plot follows a group of scientists that seemingly were the parents of everyone that works for the UMBRELLA CORP. They can’t stop screwing with zombies and trying to figure them out. Meanwhile outside the zombies are trying to figure out how to get in and we all know this underground bunker will only hold out for so long even with a bunch of military guys around that apparently didn’t attend the same politeness school that the imperial storm troopers did.

The one female in the entire film is the only one with common sense but even she has grotesque flashbacks that would have been cool if they didn’t come across as just a way to fill up the 96 minute running time. I am a zombie movie fan and I really had a hard time sitting through this disaster. I will give the effects crew credit for some of the effects but the zombie horde shots in this were right in line with “we shot this over the weekend” flicks that are coming out from college kids these days.

I should also say that the only standout performances came from Lori Cardille (as Sarah) and one of the biggest jerks in the movie Joseph Pilato (as Rhodes). In spite of the love others have given this flick, I can't in good faith give it any better than a 3 out of 7.
