30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007)
Tagline: They're Coming!
(Horror, Action, Snow Boots) [R]
Okay, first off I would be shocked if you are a horror fan at
all and haven’t bothered checking this out.
Second off, I am going to say I am not by a LONG SHOT a fan of the comic….sorry it just doesn’t interest me.
This
movie though – might be in the TOP 50 vampire movies of all time. The premise
is genius. Vampires are going to the one place they can find where it will be
dark a lot…Alaska. As they descend upon a small town what happens next is one
of the most intense, well-acted, and well-shot vampire takeovers ever filmed. It
doesn’t take long before the sheriff decides to take a stand and the survivors
are forced to take drastic measures as the vampires become more and more
desperate to draw out the remaining food source.
For me this is by a long shot
Josh Hartnett’s best role as Eben Oleson and among a host of other great
performances Melissa George (THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE GOOD WIFE), really
stands out. There is also a little-noticed X-MEN tie-in. The main vampire in
this movie is played by Danny Huston who also played Stryker in the ill-fated
X-MEN ORGINS: WOLVERINE.
The cinematography and effects in this are over-the-top good
and we are taken to a dreary world where the only thing we can hope for is
sun-light. If I have one complaint about this it's one Godophobic line from the main vampire, but to be honest you would expect a really dumb vampire to say crap like that.
A superb addition to any horror marathon, if you haven’t definitely
check out 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. I give this a solid 6 out of 7.
