BRIDE OF CHUCKY (1998) : 31 DAYS OF MADNESS.....

BRIDE OF CHUCKY (1998)

After CHILD’S PLAY 3 basically flopped at the box office UNIVERSAL wasn’t ready for another 7 years to jump back on the CHUCKY train. In this installment Chucky’s old girlfriend has a cop friend steal his remains from an evidence facility and she brings him back to life using a “Voodoo For Dummies” book. Chucky then turns her into a doll also and the two make quite the killing pair. I have several issues with this movie which included the worst and most boring opening in the entire series. While the evidence lab does pay tribute to other horror movies, it honestly doesn’t capture the creepy factor of any of the other CHILD’S PLAY opening.

Gearing more towards humor than actual horror John Ritter, Jennifer Tilly (who has always kinda bugged me but is a pretty good actress for what she does), and Katherine Heigl (who is no stranger to horror – VALENTINE & EVIL NEVER DIES and looks freakin great in this), bring the star power. On a good night I probably enjoy this more but after watching the series this week, I honestly thought this was the weakest so far. This is not to say that fans of the series won’t like this but if you thought how Chucky comes back to life in part 3 was a stretch, this one will feel like a complete joke.

Fans of Rob Zombie (which I am very much not) will recognize some of the music and the overall production value is good given we get some decent explosions and the practical effects take it up a notch. Unfortunately the plot here for me is beyond stupid and the little things they tried to do to make up for that, didn’t cut it. If this movie had been just a little more fun, I would have excused how bad the plot was, but there are so many lulls in dialog and so many poor attempts at humor (smoking pot and the physical reasoning behind the doll sex) it just didn’t go anywhere for me. I get that some of this stuff is part of horror, it just didn’t reach the level the rest of these series did to this point.

I give this movie a 3 out of 7. The next level up is probably just a little high. Rating Definition – What? This movie was not what you expected. You can not decide if this movie was good or bad but you know there were a few redeemable qualities about it. If you can remember what they were, you might be talked into watch it again.
