ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS (1957)
Dale “Hank, he gave his life!”
Martha “I know”.
If you have seen any
black and white sci-fy horror, you probably have seen Roger Corman’s name
attached to something somewhere and the movie was probably out of control.
ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS is pretty out of freaking control. A group of scientists decide to find out how
jacked up stuff gets when you nuke the crap out of it. It doesn’t take long
before they discover that the island they are on has been taken over by arrogant
buck toothed gigantic crabs that will taunt you before dividing you from your
arms and legs. On top of all this, the island is shrinking and everything is
just starting to be no fun at all.
Probably the most
entertaining thing about this movie is that the monsters actually talk you to
death before they kill you to death. Everyone in the movie is so serious about their
roles and to be honest, for films of this era, there is simply nothing lacking
here. Even some of the effects are a bit ahead of their time (not to say we don’t
have a really healthy helping of cheese going on here as well).
Acting-wise the most memorable person in this is Russell Johnson who was in THIS PLANET EARTH but was most famous for playing the professor on GILLIGAN'S ISLAND. I will say that Pamela Duncan also kills it as Martha Hunter. I am not too familiar with Duncan's work, but she has over 99 acting credits. Richard Garland isn't amazing, but he's pretty decent as Dale Brewer. He is probably most famous for PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO!
I would be lying if I said I didn’t love this
thing. At just over an hour of running time there is very little time to really
get bored. There is a lot of black and white stuff out there on streaming services, so it’s easy to come by.
This film is worth your time if you are
into this kind of film at all.
