Walked into this movie getting a lot of what I expected, and some of what I didn’t. Musically it’s not ROCK OF AGES but it does have plenty of “yes this is awesome” moments and strikes me as the kind of movie that will go down as a guilty pleasure rather than a cult classic someday.
Unlike some of its predecessors, PITCH PERFECT does a good job of getting you to like the antagonists in the film and you will probably actually find yourself rocking out to them. So before I get to who to look for, this movie is worth putting on your BUY list (just wanted to clear that up).
You will get a good dose of a bunch of newcomers, none commanding the screen more than Skylar Astin (WRECK-IT-RALPH) as Jesse especially as his role gets more and more defined in the film's second half. The lead is played by Anna Kendrick (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD) as Beca who spends a lot of the time spurning the advances of Jesse and trying to fit in.
Alexis Knapp (who had a very minor role in PERCY JACKSON & THE LIGHTNING THIEF) and Rebel Wilson (BRIDES MAIDS) help round out a college all-girls singing group trying to re-invent itself after a disaster finals appearance the year before.
I did see a lot of kids at my showing, but this isn't really a kid's movie. If you want that, maybe check out BANDSLAM or LEMONADE MOUTH. One word of warning, watch for projectile vomit. Not giving away anything…just watch for it. Also, the ending is a little abrupt, however, it’s a really good time. I give this movie a 4 out of 7.
