THE LONE RANGER (2013)

THE LONE RANGER (2013)

So Hollywood has apparently run out of most of their really good ideas and has decided to lean on some more reliable fare. I am not a big fan of rehashing old ideas, but I don’t hate it. As much as some people seem to have disliked the last PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN entry, ON STRANGERS TIDES still racked in over $1 billion worldwide (which was more than the original and more than AT WORLD’S END). I bring this up to solidify why you get Johnny Depp and why you have Jerry Bruckheimer make your movies when you want huge success. In spite of what you have heard THE LONE RANGER is a well done and very entertaining movie. In the slow parts, there are more hidden gems than most reviews give the film credit for. We also get light doses of  Captain Jack eating parts of his own brain oddities we saw in PIRATES. That’s right, there is some weird stuff in this one at times that seemingly doesn't tie to the actual story at all and I love that about it.

I am operating on some bias here though. If you follow my TOP 10’s at all you know that Ruth Wilson was in my TOP 10 actresses back in 2009 mostly for her incredible job as 313 in the TV mini-series THE PRISONER. So I was happy to see she had not completely fallen off Hollywood’s radar because she is an amazing and highly underrated actress. Some of the movie's ideas and concepts may play it too close to the chest for a lot of viewers. I heard some older fans complaining about the violence, but I also noticed the social climate of the great western was problematic. I won’t spell out the issues in this review. I just wanted to point out that the viewer needs to expect this movie to be brutally honest…about brutality.

This is not your 50’s LONE RANGER. It’s a well-crafted action film wrapped in haunting historical social depravity with humor thrown in.

I give this film a 4 out of 7.
