What do you get when the Voice actor for Bobs Burgers and Archer Narrates an over-the-top action comedy? You get Boy kills world. I went into this movie pretty blind. I saw a teaser trailer hearing Jon Benjamin’s voice and was instantly sold. This movie is everything I love in an action movie, Stylish, action-packed with crazy amounts of blood. There are some scenes that will make you have a grimacing reaction.
Boy kills world follows Boy who is on a quest of vengeance against Hilda Van Der Koy who murdered his family leaving him deaf and mute. So he has an inner voice that is done by the amazingly funny Jon Benjamin. He is also followed by his sister that pops up in his imagination. He is trained by a shaman as a boy into a living weapon to take her down. In this city they have a thing called the culling, this is how they keep the people under control. This is also the only aspect of the film thats not very thought out or explained and honestly my only real complaint about this movie. But honestly it doesn't really matter.
Let’s get into what this movie does right and it's a lot. This movie is hyper-stylized; the cinematography matches the high-octane action with crazy camera angles with a fluidness in movement that I love to see. We get a mix of great stunt work with awesome wire gags, awesome falls. I applaud the Stunt team in this one. But we also get a mix of some CGI to help give these action scenes a little bit of a boost. Speaking of action this movie has TONS of it but also gallons of blood. A lot of hand-to-hand fights with some pretty decent gun play but this movie really shows off its fists of fury. Boy uses everything at his disposal, the scene with the cheese grater I guarantee you won’t look at one the same. It was worse than the scene from Evil Dead Rises. Also, the claw necklace scene made me grimace.
I honestly didn’t think this movie was gonna be so bloody. We get a nice balance between practical gore and some CGI gore. The movie is also just so darn funny as well. I’m a huge fan of Bob's Burgers and Archer so hearing his voice the whole time is great but what he says is even funnier. But I wanna give a shout-out to Quinn Copeland who plays Mina the sister, she is so great and funny in this as well. She’s like his little companion the whole time. There is also a funny scene with one of the resistant members and because Boy has to read lips and the guy has a big beard it's hard for him to understand so all we hear is gibberish. This movie might not be for everyone but this sure as heck was for me. Boy Kills World was great Directorial Debut and I can’t wait to see what else this Director brings to the table. That’s why I give Boy Kills World an 8.5/10
