SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY (1987)

SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY (1987)

Tagline: Big Movie. Big Production. Big Girls.

(Sci-Fi, Adventure, Weirdo In Space) [R]

Well, if it's all the same to you, I'd rather not run out of power between worlds, as they say.

In this one, Daria and Tisa escape a space prison, but end up crash landing on a jungle planet nearby. The planet seems wonderful and they are accommodated nicely by a guy named Zed. Upon running into a brother and sister named Rik and Shala. Rik suspects there is something up with Zed and he’s correct as Zed reveals he’s a big-time hunter…and the next prey on the list are his guests.

First off, this movie is actually a sci-fi flick, but it is certainly not without its moments of nudity. So if you are planning on watching this, it’s not for kids. It’s barely for adults. Cindy Beal gets a ton of lines in this as Tisa, but the main actress is actually Elizabeth Kaitan and she plays Daria. Kaitan is best known for the VICE ACADEMY series but was also Robin in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD. Her acting is just so so in this movie, but she was in over 39 movies and TV shows all the way through 1999. As far as I can tell, she is still on the planet and alive as of the writing of this review.

Effects wise this thing is rough, especially when you get close up on this alien they have in here. It only resembles the alien in the poster slightly, but the mask or costume or whatever is pretty damn janky. The robot in the movie is even worse and the ship Daria and Tisa are flying looks like it was thrown together by a 3rd-grade robotics class. I also really didn’t like the soundtrack in this so it’s definitely got its issues. Having said all that, this flick wasn’t meant to be ALIEN, it was meant to draw in a specific audience, and in that regard, it was probably somewhat effective.

Acting wise this movie also features Brinke Stevens as Shala. I have mentioned this in other reviews but Stevens is definitely one of the giants when it comes to “scream queens”. With the “creepy” angle this movie takes at times, this one falls at least slightly into the “horror” genre and there is some screaming in this. Stevens doesn’t blow you away in this, but having her in it, did bring more credibility to the film for fans at the time. We also get Carl Horner who plays Shala’s brother Rik. Horner has abandoned acting and only did 2 films, but he was heavily involved in the effects industry working on films like COWBOYS & ALIENS and REAL STEEL. Zed was played by Don Scribner who at the time came across as like a “rent-a-Christian Bale” type. SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY was Scribner’s first film but he used that to his advantage and is still acting as of the writing of this review. He does a good job of being really freaking creepy in this thing.

Depending on how you view movies, this thing is basically part of the cult movie hall of fame or its undeniable unapologetic sci-fi trash. Who knows, if you look at this as trash, then maybe some Friday night you are in the mood for trash and this is going to be your thing. For me, it’s probably just a 1 or 2 time, just because I was mostly doing this review for my yearly “80’s theme” November reviews, and the movie's main villain is just a little too much for me in the “not sure how much I can put up with this creepy guy” department.

Overall I have to give this thing a 4 out of 7. It is pretty solid in regards to doing exactly what it set out to do. Just be warned…this flick is more in the sci-fi trash department for me than the cult movie hall of fame.
