A MINECRAFT MOVIE (2025)

A MINECRAFT MOVIE (2025)

Tagline: Be There and Be Square.

(Fantasy, Adventure, Hip To Be Square) [PG]

First we mine, then we craft. LET'S MINECRAFT!

In this one, this guy Steve goes into a portal inside a mine near where he lives. The portal leads to a world where you can build things with your mind. He ends up allowing himself to be trapped there to avoid having a magic cube that opens the portal taken by what is basically an evil pig queen. I mean, let's just keep it all the way real. Meanwhile, a washed-up video game master named Garrett, a multitasking mobile zoo operator named Dawn, and a brother and sister, Henry and Natalie, all access the portal, leading to a cube-themed adventure.

Let me start by saying I am not the target audience for this flick, so when I walked into this, I wasn't quite expecting the enthusiasm the audience displayed. We had people clapping during songs and cheering when certain lines were said. The atmosphere was pretty fun. I have heard some horror stories about things getting out of control at some theaters with people throwing food all over, etc, but that wasn't the case at the showing I was at.

When it comes to the story this movie is basically just the LEGO MOVIE and THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE kind of all mashed together. The big difference is that this movie doesn't have any deep meaning, and it really isn't meant to. Overall, it's kind of a celebration of creativity, only in a really limited boxy sort of way.

The cast is not what I would expect from a flick like this. Jason Momoa plays Garrett, who is a huge jerk for the most part, but everyone seems to like him. If you are a Momoa fan, this probably isn't the movie you want to go see just for him. At least on screen, Jason is basically turning into a feminine shell of his former self right before our eyes. Jack Black plays Steve, but is basically still the same Jack Black we have always known. I actually really like his singing for some reason, so pretty much every time he decided to belt out a tune, it was a plus. Sebastian Hansen is relatively new at acting, but he does a pretty good job as Henry. Emma Myers plays Henry's sister Natalie. She was awesome in WEDNESDAY and FAMILY SWITCH, and this one was no exception. I also liked Danielle Brooks as Dawn in this, but I am not familiar with her other work.

The pacing in this thing is fine, I didn't feel like the movie was even an hour long, much less 101 minutes. The audience's reactions did make the movie more entertaining. The imagination behind it all was pretty incredible. The concepts were pretty easy to understand, even for someone like me who has never played the game. Will I buy this movie...no. For me, it's a one-time watch unless I end up in a hostage situation where the people I am with are watching it and I can't leave. I typically only buy movies I know I will want to watch over and over. Some "good" movies don't fall into that category.

The only real negative for me is that it just all felt too "kiddie". Like, maybe the core audience is supposed to be 5 or 6 years old? I don't know.

Thankfully, the movie did not come across as having some sort of agenda so I still had fun without having to feel like I was battling some soul sucking "everything is terrible including you unless you belong to insert some group here" message. This thing also had a pretty cool 80's rock-type score and soundtrack, which is always awesome.

This thing gets a 4 out of 7. It's been done better before, but I still enjoyed it.
