BLOOD BITE (2020)

BLOOD BITE (2020)

Tagline: Smarter Faster And Deadlier.

(Action, Drama, Some Of The Worst CGI Sharks Of All Time) [PG]

Note: This movie never got an MPAA rating, but it would have landed a [PG]. It was originally titled “Horror Shark” which is pretty odd because this movie contains zero horror.

Just admit it, this whole thing is incredibly stupid!

This story revolves around Ming Shu Yung who decides to work with a biologist named Jessica at Leeang Sea World on a project. He is not excited about any of this because he is still traumatized from a shark attack that happened a few years earlier. He actually takes an experimental serum that he developed to keep one of his legs working. On top of all this, his girlfriend Jiwan also works at Leeang Sea World so that gives us a bit of added drama here. She is basically in love with him because he saved her life, but that isn’t important right now. The project led by Yow is working on a genetically engineered shark as Leeagn Sea World’s new attraction. It ends up being super smart as well as extremely violent and breaks out. Now the team must stop it from spreading death and destruction.

If you didn’t want to read through that intro it’s fine. Essentially this movie is a Chinese mash-up of DEEP BLUE SEA and JAWS 3D and its way down there on the scale of shark flicks I’ve seen in the past few years. I now have 47 shark flicks ranked and this one lands at a measly 39 spot. I did not hate the cast and the sets are actually pretty decent. In certain shots, the underwater base/aquarium/SeaWorld looks pretty decent, but everything shark related is total crap. This was put out by Andy Films which is a Chinese budget studio and these guys make THE ASYLUM (America’s Mockbuster Kings) look like they are a big-budget studio. I can’t stand this damn thing. It’s probably one of the worst sharks in a non-Wild Eye, Brett Kelly, or Polonia Brothers shark flick. It’s not bad in a good or even funny way either. It’s bad in a way that makes this movie unforgivably bad. I would rather have seen stock footage from the 80s for the shark shots over what we got.

This is one of those movies where the American dub actually makes things worse, so I am not blaming the actors or actresses in this. I am blaming terrible execution, CGI, and a terrible script. Trying to cross over a DEEP BLUE SEA plot and a JAWS 3D plot wasn’t the worst thing I’ve seen, but the story and the reasons for it are all over the place and the relationship stuff in the film doesn’t fix anything. I have read some positive reviews on this movie and I am just not on board with that. I love crazy goofy stuff like this normally, but I didn’t find this fun or good or even memorable.

I have been watching a lot of Chinese sci-fi lately, but I am still not at a point where I can say that I know any of this cast. It does look like a few of them only have 1 or 2 films under their belts. It’s possible I missed some of the humor via translation but I kind of doubt it. The funniest line I remember was one of the characters saying that some people are dumber than fish. On a serious level, there is actually a line in this that refers to God’s forgiveness for one of the characters which I thought was a positive, mostly because God is almost never brought up in any shark movie, let alone one coming out of China even in the dubbing.

Overall if you just want a shark flick you can check out of, that has a storyline that loosely resembles DEEP BLUE SEA and has embarrassingly bad CGI, then this is going to be your movie. If you are looking for a fantastic shark movie on par with DEEP BLUE SEA, you are going to need to look elsewhere. I didn’t even find this mildly entertaining even just on a visual level.

I give this thing a 2 out of 7 and may God help anyone that decides to watch this on purpose.
