THE WRATH OF BECKY (2023)

THE WRATH OF BECKY (2023)

Tagline: Hell hath no fury like a 16-year-old scorned.

(Action, Thriller, Propaganda) [R]

There was a little girl, Who had a little curl, Right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good, She was very good, But when she was bad, She was horrid.

This is the second installment of the “BECKY” series where Becky is moving from foster home to foster home trying to recover from an attack on her family years earlier. After settling in with an older woman named Elena, that loves having her around she starts working at a diner. It doesn’t take long before some sick individuals come into town to prepare for something horrible and Becky decides to antagonize them. This provokes them to attack Becky, and Elena and take Becky’s dog. Clearly, now it’s time to deal with THE WRATH OF BECKY.

First off this is another one of those films where the writers just could not avoid trashing Christianity. So honestly, this script is absolute trash. I hope these writers can pull whatever is up their a-s out of it and just be better than the Godophobic prejudiced individuals they appear to be.

So why do I think that? Well, without giving away the rest of the plot, the first couple that Becky visits are a mixed-Christian couple. They are portrayed as over the top, but they are kind and far from abusive. Becky runs away the first night after being ridiculously fake and insulting them in the narration. So right off the bat, I stopped caring about her as a character. I can’t stand fake ungrateful people. So in the script, this is just an unnecessary way to take a shot at Christianity. I do expect that from time to time in secular films, but I am always going to call it out when writers are openly Godophobic. Especially when it has nothing to do with the plot.

Secondly, the main part of the movie is about Becky provoking this evil group that is about to do something horrible. The group is clearly misusing the Bible to get the results they want even if it breaks one of the 10 commandments. I think there are provisions for war in scripture, but not just randomly killing people when it’s not a self-defense situation. One of the characters in the group realizes what is really going on and tries to leave the group and it doesn’t go well. The fact that they had this group praying to God kind of indicates that somehow if you believe in God you are probably going to end up a sadistic killer who takes people’s dogs from them.

I am happy to tell you that no one reading their bible who is a real Christian (not a fake bs version that secular people like to sell themselves) and following the 10 Commandments is going to kill you unless you try to kill them and in some cases not even then. The 6th Commandment is literally “You shall not murder”. There is a whole theological difference between murder and killing someone in self-defense, but I am not going to get into that here.  So this movie is basically just a pro-CIA propaganda film that is packaged in a 16-year-old revenge story. The bigger problem if you don’t care about all the anti-God stuff and the gaslighting that goes on here Becky just really isn’t a character I found myself rooting for. I didn’t want her character to die, I just completely lost interest after a very specific incident in the film. Basically the only character I really liked had something horrible happen to them (and no, it’s not the couple Becky left behind, seriously, they are better off).

Acting wise Lulu Wilson (READY PLAYER ONE) is very good in this. I hope she picks better projects moving forward, but she did what they asked her to do. Seann William Scott (BULLETPROOF MONK) is solid in this, but of course, I didn’t like any of the characters from the group that Becky goes after, so there was a bit of fun in seeing them get what was coming to them in this world. Denise Burse (THE JUROR) is solid in the scenes she gets but wasn’t given nearly enough screen time. Aaron Dalla Villa plays a sinister character named DJ and does a great job. Everyone else is convincing in this so performances weren’t really an issue.

There is a bit of a lesson in here that should be touched on. If you are not a Christian, don’t allow yourself to be radicalized to the point where you just blanket entire groups in one giant hate cloak. I see this a lot online. The same goes for Christians, don’t allow yourself to be carried outside of what the Bible says to lean on some sort of understanding about something you think you have. For both sides, the truth will set you free, but don’t make up what the truth is based on the hype from the fringe.

The pacing in this film works well but over the course of the film, it starts to feel more and more like an agenda film with nothing really new or interesting to offer. The score and soundtrack are fine. The tone reminded me a lot of SPONTANEOUS which I also couldn’t stand. Talented people dealing with vomit-inducing scripts.

I have to give this thing a 3 out of 7. There is a lesson in here, but this script is a dumpster fire that feels like it was only written to pump up an agenda.
