MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION (2015)

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION (2015)

Tagline: Desperate Times. Desperate Measures.

(Adventure, Thriller, Not That Rogue) [PG-13]

It really is you... I've heard stories. They can't all be true.

For this one, we are introduced to the head of the CIA Alan Hunley. His goal is to disband the IMF (Impossible Mission Force) and fold the agents into the CIA. Ethan Hunt is targeted to be brought in and killed if found. However, when Hunt thinks he is being brought in for another big mission, it’s actually a sinister and lethal organization called the Syndicate that is bringing him in. Can his team stop the Syndicate from dictating the affairs of nations based on the deaths of very specific leaders?

First off, of the 5 films in this series that I have reviewed so far, this is the best effort. One thing I thought was amazing about it was the fact that it was a return to form in letting us know who the villain was and giving him a great wicked personality. It also seems like he is going to win and I won’t say if he does or not. The other great thing about this movie is that we get another Nyah (from M:I -2) type character in Ilsa Faust. Ilsa however is a highly trained British agent who will snap your neck for looking at her wrong if she believes it is the right thing to do. The reason I think she is more like Nyah than say Jane from GHOST PROTOCOL is because like Nyah, we spend a ton of this movie trying to figure out what side she is really on.

Acting wise this thing is incredible and we get all IMF agents we’ve seen before in Benji (Simon Pegg), Luther (Ving Rhames), Brandt (Jeremy Renner), and Ethan (Tom Cruise). The newcomers here are Rebecca Ferguson who plays Ilsa Faust. She is fantastic in this, but to be honest, I not a fan of her work in anything else I’ve seen so far. She does appear in the dumpster fire coma capsule DUNE though if you are a fan of hers. We also get Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley and he is pretty solid here. I am not sure how much more acting Baldwin will be doing though, he is likely to be on trial for murder soon, due to allegedly shooting someone on the set of his movie RUST. We also get the creepy and fantastic Sean Harris who plays Lane. I am not familiar with Harris’s work outside of this series, but I think he is by far the best villain in this entire series thus far.

Action wise this movie is awesome and the bike chase and water scenes are incredible. I guess in real life Tom Cruise can hold his breath for 6 minutes. I might be able to hold my breath for 2 minutes, so his lung capacity is nuts. What sets this installment above the rest is the actual storyline. Apparently, the script came late in the game production-wise, but it is outstanding. I love the idea of a group of supposedly dead former international spies forming a group designed to replace the IMF, only they are evil. It’s freaking brilliant. The pacing is near perfect and Ilsa really steals the show in this one. I kind of couldn’t wait for her to get back on screen and jump up on some dude’s neck and take him down like a sack of potatoes. She had a very BLACK WIDOW-like fighting style.

The scale and score are superb. I won’t say that I didn’t miss Julia, but maybe someday she will be back in the picture. I will say that they never mention Ethan having a wife in this one. I also have to say that Brandt was far better in this movie than he was in Ghost Protocol as a character and Jeremy Renner just seemed way more comfortable this time around.

Overall this gets a 7 out of 7. I can see myself watching this one several times.
