ALIEN OUTLAW (1985)

ALIEN OUTLAW (1985)

Tagline: Only One Woman Had the Guts to Fight Back

(Sci-Fi, Western, Diamond Booking Agency) [R]

Note – This movie wasn’t given an MPAA rating, but if it was it would get an R.

In this one, some aliens land in a small town for an unspecified reason and just start killing everyone they run into. No one seems to really be able to do anything about it, so Jesse Jamison who does a trick gun show takes matters into her own hands.

Okay, so this is an independent film that had a bunch of actors and actresses that were involved in next to nothing else. One of the exceptions is Sunset Carson who is very likable in this movie. He is kind of just a gentleman, (who is named Sunset) looking out for Jesse Jamison who is played by Kari Anderson. Sunset Carson was in 27 different acting roles which were pretty much all westerns. Most of his career was in the 1940s, but he continued acting up to this thing came out.

Speaking of Kari Anderson, she has the lead role in this as Jesse Jamison but wasn’t in another movie or TV show ever as an actress. Instead, she got into makeup for various shows including CW’s THE FLASH at one point. The other exception on known actors was Lash La Rue. He plays Alex Thompson in this but does a far worse job than Sunset Carson. La Rue was in over 40 acting roles and was also known mostly for westerns.

Plot-wise this is like the Wal-Mart brand PREDATOR precursor in one way. We do get aliens that are hunting people with actual guns, but outside of that, the two movies really part way in manner of direction, quality, the script, effects, and just about everything else. The pacing at times is rough, but we do get enough interesting scenes to keep this low-budget bicycle peddling along.

What this movie got right was throwing a few scenes with humor because this was a hard movie to take seriously. We also got some pretty cool-looking alien masks and the overall design works. It reminds me of something we might have seen in NIGHT OF THE COMET 2 if they ever made one. The two main characters Sunset and Jesse worked well together. I also loved the opening aliens landing in a flying saucer shot because it felt like something we would have seen in the 50s in a colorized version of something.

Yes, the pacing is terrible, and the direction and edits are the stuff of film school drops outs, but I kind of really liked this thing because it reminds me of some of the crazy b-movies I used to watch with my friend Clayton in high school in the ’80s. This is the kind of flick we would have just popped in the VCR and cracked up the entire time.

I have to give this thing a 4 out of 7. I’ve seen a lot of b-movies in my day even from the 80s and this is very far from the worst. Just don’t take it seriously and you may have a bit of fun with it.
