I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE (1958)

I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE (1958)

Tagline: Is it possible? Is it true? Can humans mate with MONSTERS?

(Sci-Fi, Horror, Red Flags That Your Man Might Be An Alien) [PG]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I think it would land at a PG.

Don't you worry Marge. I know where to get our men. Human men!

In this one, we are taken to Norrisville where a man named Bill decides to leave his bachelor party and head home. He ends up having an encounter with an alien that takes morphs into something that looks like him and takes his place. It doesn’t take long before his soon-to-be wife thinks something may be wrong, but her love is strong and she marries this man who really isn’t a man. After making some startling discoveries and encountering her husband’s weird behaviors she begins to alert the town as to what is going on. Will anyone believe her? How far are these body snatchers willing to go to try and take over the world?

First off, this movie had me at the edge of my 1950’s sci-fi/horror-loving seat. I honestly didn’t even know what to think I was going to get when I added this movie to my streaming service queue. I was NOT disappointed. Unlike a lot of the more budget-friendly sci-fi flicks of the 50s, this one is actually really well done.

The score and sets are awesome. The aliens look fantastic and the script is also really solid. Regarding the visual effects, a lot of that was done by John P. Fulton who also worked on the parting of the Red Sea in “The Ten Commandments”.

Acting-wise everyone is really solid in this. The main bride, “Marge”, is played by Gloria Talbott who was famous for DAUGHTER OF DR. JEKYLL and had a career that spanned from 1935 to 1966. Tom Tryon plays Bill Farrell, Marge’s husband. For most of this movie, Tom’s acting is purposely ridged, but he was extremely convincing. I am not super familiar with his other work in Hollywood. Ken Lynch is solid as Dr. Wayne and was most famous for playing Dr. Horning on the original Battlestar Galactica TV series. Peter Baldwin was also good as Officer Hank Swanson. Peter ended up being the director of the TV show “The Wonder Years” and a billion other things but was also in a cool sci-fi movie called THE SPACE CHILDREN

In a giant pile of 1950’s sci-fi, this is a really well-done movie from start to finish and it definitely does a good job of ramping up the “what would you do in this creepy situation” vibes. It also made me want to buy a dog because dogs know what’s up. Every dog you see in this thing is fantastic. I will say as a heads up though, something terrible happens to one of them, so if you are sensitive about that, maybe look away during the basement scene. However, I can also see the argument that they wanted you to know these aliens were freakin evil.

Overall though this is a cool intriguing blast from the sci-fi past worthy of a horror marathon or just a slow Saturday night. I have to give this thing a 5 out of 7, but it would have been higher if they had cut the scene I mentioned earlier.
