DEEP BLUE SEA 3 (2020)

DEEP BLUE SEA 3 (2020)

Tagline: Deadlier Than Ever.

(Sci-Fi, Action, Smart Sharks) [R]

Hey, all you Shark Week fans out there. Welcome back, it's our third summer here at Little Happy, an abandoned fishing village in the Mozambique Channel.

In this one, there is a small floating village off the coast of Mozambique where Emma Collins and a team of ecologists and biologists are studying the effects of climate change. It doesn’t take long before they have a showdown with Bella’s pups, three genetically enhanced bull sharks. Can Emma and her team survive greed, a sinking foundation, and mad science’s apex predators?

First off, after this movie came out there was a lot of speculation as to when DEEP BLUE SEA 4 would come out. The thought at the time was that we would be getting a 3rd installment around this time in 2022. However, as I am writing this, there are no concrete plans for another movie in the series and some are even saying this one is going to be the last. That seems like a pretty bold statement since the first movie DEEP BLUE SEA and this thing are 21 years apart. It should also be noted that gives the pathway between all 3 films. We don’t really get a connection between DEEP BLUE SEA and DEEP BLUE SEA 2 until this movie explains that. DEEP BLUE SEA is one of the few if not the only series of shark movies where a few of the sharks are given names (‘Bella’ and ‘Sally’). I am not sure if this idea was influenced by 2015’s JURASSIC WORLD where Owen names the raptors he’s training.

In general, this movie is considered a “return to form” for the series, but to be honest, all 3 movies had pretty crazy shark “kills” and DEEP BLUE SEA 2’s actual setting is a lot closer to the original that this one. Where this thing really sets itself apart into being a TOP 10 shark film as of 2022, is that everything is ramped up a bit from the previous installment. With more intense human villains the tension is raised quite a bit because our heroes are getting punched and beaten up on top of everything else. I think the daylight setting and having bigger sharks as the main threat made this feel lets chaotic with a focused fear factor. We also have bombs involved and one of the sharks gets captured. It’s all pretty nuts.

If I had some complaints it would be that the shark’s teeth in this one and in DEEP BLUE SEA 2 are toned way down. The shark’s teeth in the original look like they are going to shred you into a million pieces. These sharks are great looking, but it also looks like they are missing about 100 teeth you think they would have just thrown in there for effect alone. The close-ups are effective but lack the “wow” of the original. I also hated the final song in this movie. We went from LL Cool J’s epic “Deepest Bluest” to something you would hear at a Dollar Tree.

For more positives, Tania Raymonds is a stronger leading lady than Danielle Saver from DEEP BLUE SEA 2. In fact, she is probably the best leading lady in the 3 films. She is best known for her role as Alex Rousseau on the TV series “Lost”. Emerson Brooks (SUPER 8) was also a solid addition to this cast as Eugene. By far my most favorite character in this. I also liked Reina Aoi as Miya, she added some youthful wonder to this and gave us a slight pinch of romance. We also get some really cool camera angles in this where the camera is panning horizontally across the water giving this thing more depth and making this set look even bigger than it is.

Overall this is a freakin solid movie. I love this one and have to give it a strong 7 out of 7. There is nothing really lacking here. No, it is not better than DEEP BLUE SEA, but it’s a brilliant entry in the best shark series there is to date.
