THE ADAM PROJECT (2022)

THE ADAM PROJECT (2022)

Tagline: Past Meets Future

(Sci-fi, Humor, Changing All The Time Travel Rules) [PG-13]

This goes on your permanent record. Do you get that? Do you care about your future? Do you? Son, you better start caring, because the future is coming, sooner than you think.

In this one, a 12-year-old named Adam Reed treats his mom like crap and gets beat up at school, and ends up finding a pilot from the future in his garage. The pilot has been shot and needs time to recover, but as Adam converses with the pilot he comes to find out that it’s actually himself from the future. As it turns out time itself is about to be controlled by a single entity that does not have the human race's best interests and heart and Adam and future Adam now have to find a way to stop it. Part of that involves going back in time and finding their father who died a year earlier.

First off, part of what made me want to watch this movie was Ryan Reynolds and Zoe Saldana who are both in it. Not all of Ryan Reynold's movies are great, but FREE GUY was fairly recent and I loved that thing. I don’t think you understand, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time, time, time… (repeated for effect). He was also good in RED NOTICE, but less so. What made me not want to see this movie was that freakin Mark Ruffalo was in it and honestly, it takes a lot for someone’s off-screen life to bug me so much I don’t want to look at them, but he is probably in the top 10 actors I really don’t care to see in anything. Regardless of that, I decided to check it out. The premise was promising and the effects looked pretty great in the previews. Was it worth it?

The short answer is yes, but this movie isn’t without a few letdowns for me. Zoe Saldana plays Laura and I don’t want to give away who her character is, but I really wish they had given her more screen time. Seems odd that you would bring in a few talents from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and don’t give them more lines. The scale also felt a bit small. Time travel gets invented but hardly anyone in 12-year-old Adam’s world seems to know it exists? The script goes overkill on taking God’s name in vain. Granted, I always expect that in secular films, but it does glaringly point out that writers are out of descriptive words. So yeah – there are a few issues with this thing, but a lot of it really works.

What this movie gets right is pretty fantastic. Casting Walker Scobell as Young Adam was a great move. Walker does a fantastic job with the role and really does come across as a witty younger version of Ryan Reynolds who plays “Big Adam”. The chemistry between the two in this movie is great. In fact, Reynolds interacts with everyone in this movie really well. Jennifer Garner who plays Ellie Reed is good in this as well, playing a concerned and grieving mother trying to make it work. I am also guessing that at some point director Shawn Levy wants to get involved with STAR WARS because this is the second movie in a row where the line “That’s a lightsaber, Dude” gets said in the script. Big Adam is also referred to as “Red Leader”, another STAR WARS reference.

The humor is pretty good if you don’t mind a few edgy jabs here and there and I think that the story moves along at a quick enough pace with a near-perfect run time of 1 hour and 46 minutes. I also really liked the soundtrack which always has the potential to make a huge impact on any movie. This is another successful collaboration between director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds worth checking out.

This one gets a 5 out of 7.
