RED NOTICE (2021)

RED NOTICE (2021)

Tagline: Pros And Cons

(Action, Adventure, Heist) [PG-13]

Keep making your jokes because I'm about to send you to the worst place in the world.

In this one, a “Red Notice” is sent out for Nolan Booth. A “Red Notice” is the highest level of warrant that Interpol uses to hunt down and capture whoever the target of the notice is. FBI profiler John Hartley is helping Interpol with the case and is considered one of the best at tracking this type of person down. Just who is Nolan Booth? Well, he’s an art thief and he is trying to obtain 3 eggs that belonged to Cleopatra. Yes, that Cleopatra. If he obtains all 3 eggs he will be given a ludicrous amount of money. To his surprise and chagrin, another master thief named “The Bishop” is also after all 3 eggs. Who will find them all first in this multinational globe-trotting quest to be the greatest art thief?

First off, no, the eggs in the movie are not real. They were made up just for the movie. So if you have one don’t worry about it…it’s a fake. It’s not real. Settle down. Also – each of the main actors in this damn movie got $20 million apiece. Normally that wouldn’t get my attention, but in this 2021 economy, $20 million will barely net you half a gallon of gas in California and maybe a slice of Ray’s mushroom pizza.

Overall the movie is pretty solid pacing-wise, but it does take a while to get going. Because of this it feels very average and almost drags for the first hour of its run time. This isn’t to say there are not some cool action sequences, there are, but it’s all just very “we’ve” seen this before. That is until about the last 50 minutes where everything ramps up and gets super fun.

Acting-wise this one has 3 actors that have also been superheroes. This I predict will get more and more common, because let’s be real….who hasn’t played a superhero? Anyway, if you were expecting Ryan Reynolds to play a character other than the one he seemingly always plays nowadays, forget about that. He portrays Nolan Booth in this and might as well just be a powerless, less crass, Deadpool. We are just going to have to get over all that because Dwayne Johnson is also playing John Hartley and John Harley is basically exactly like Dwayne Johnson (best known for JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE) so I guess that works out. To top that off we also get Gal Gadot playing “The Bishop” who is not surprisingly a lot like “Diana” or WONDER WOMAN. She might even be more “I will kick your face in” than WONDER WOMAN. Anyway – I didn’t have an issue with any of that. In fact, I was kind of hoping for it. The rest of the cast is also solid. A lot of people will recognize Ritu Arya who is Inspector Urvashi Das in this but is best known for being the super crazy Lila Pitts from THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY.

The soundtrack is just so, so and I wasn’t excited about the score. If anything is missing from this thing, it’s the fact that almost none of the music or score draws you in. The script is well written though and that makes up for a lot. Cinematically they used some cool first-person drone shots via Johnny Schaer who I have never heard of but is apparently super famous for this kind of stuff. I could have actually used a bit more of that though, it’s pretty well done. We do get a prison escape scene that looks an awful lot like the one in BLACK WIDOW

I see a lot of reviews out there saying this is pretty fun but run of the mill and in spite of all of the locations we see in the movie, this actually does feel just above average. I don’t see myself running out and buying it, as much as I love the cast. For me, this is going to land at a 5 out of 7. If you can catch it in theaters do that only if you have seen all the other big movies out, that are not DUNE, otherwise, maybe rent it at a REDBOX.
