THE BOB’S BURGER MOVIE (2022)

THE BOB’S BURGER MOVIE (2022)

Tagline: Let's get this patty started.

(Animation, Adventure, Comedy) [PG-13]

Dad, I don't want to stop your flow, but can you pass the pilaf?

In this one, Bob and his family are already having money issues when a water main breaks causing a giant sinkhole right in front of Bob’s Burgers. This kind of kills any chance of them making enough money to keep the restaurant. However, when a mystery presents itself involving the restaurant's landlord, Bob’s kids see an opportunity to solve it hoping to save the restaurant.

First off, this movie should probably be considered more of an entry point for potential Bob’s Burgers fans than for fans that have been with the show for years. This is not to say it doesn’t offer the same poignant laughs, wonderful comedic pacing, and heartwarming tone of the show. Having seen some reviews complaining this is basically a giant so-so episode I wished after seeing this I could disagree. I don’t, and it isn't a problem because of the way this show works.

The great thing about Bob’s Burgers a 30-minute show on the FOX network is that it’s almost always brilliantly written and almost always loaded with heart. While we do have some episodes that are kind of crass and for me, there is a bit of over-focus on Bob’s wife Louise’s obsession with “wine”, the show for the most part is magic. However, when it comes to the movie, there isn’t an over-focus on anything. What we get here is an amazing level of balance in respect to humor and adventure on a Bob’s Burger level that makes sense. Nothing about this movie is overhanded or pretentious. It feels very much like it belongs in the overall cartoon canon for the show and I loved all of that.

For those that are new to Bob’s Burgers, you do not need to know anything about this show before watching the movie to jump right in. For fans, there are some nods and references to things that happened in the show, but everything works for both audiences I think.

Where I would have changed things up is including at least a few of the “children’s” stories that were extended. This element is one of the more incredible things that push the series along creatively. I also think one of the best things about the show is some of the other kids the Belcher kids interact with at school and we get very little of that here. The school scenes are pretty non-existent.

Voice cast wise we get a lot of the main talents from the show with a few exceptions and everyone does a great job. A few of the connections are pretty cool. Sergeant Bosco is voiced by Gary Cole who is best known for playing Bill Lumbergh in OFFICE SPACE. Kristen Schaal who voices Louise was in 2020s MY SPY.

I won’t get into any spoilers, but for those that haven’t watched the show, BOB’S BURGERS focuses on the “Belcher” family, Bob, Linda, and their children Louise, Tina, and Linda. The movie does center around Louise more than the other characters, but it does a good job of getting a lot of the beloved characters from the show involved, but I still feel some of the best of what Bob’s Burgers has to offer was left on the cutting room floor.

I have to give this a 5 out of 7. The humor is spot-on for the most part and the creators did an amazing job, but as I mentioned, I do think there was a bit of an opportunity to have some fun with what I think are the best elements of the show and that doesn't happen, but we still get a movie that is pretty near epic.
