EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022)

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022)

Tagline: Nope.

(Action, Martial Arts, Creepy Crap) [R]

This one is about a woman who owns a laundromat with her husband and discovers she is part of a giant plan to save the multi-verse from an evil entity that is rumored to want to destroy everything.

First off, I am going to come right out of the gate saying I cannot recommend this movie to anyone at all. I pretty much ended up hating it and the crazy part about it is that about 50% of it was actually just a bunch of weird stuff that I normally love.

Starting off with the good, I have to say the concept for this movie was actually pretty cool. I love the idea of gaining powers from other versions of “you” in other parts of the multi-verse. It’s an awesome sci-fi concept. What else is good about this is the casting. Michelle Yeoh plays the lead Evelyn Wang, and my favorite film of hers is probably THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR. It was also awesome seeing Ke Huy Quan in this as well, and his role is probably my favorite aside from him being in the midst of a really crazy rationale for a decision he’s making in the movie. Ke Huy Quan is most famous for his role as “Data” in THE GOONIES. The movie also includes one of my favorite actors ever James Hong, who is famous for BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. We also get a decent dose of Jamie Lee Curtis but her role in this is the worst movie I have seen her in for decades. Stephanie Hsu plays both Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki. She is solid in the role acting-wise like a lot of the rest of the cast.

The effects are also solid except for anything involving a dog or a raccoon. Then the effects just go out the window.

Now getting to where this thing went into the creepy and just plain degrading zone. First off yes, it’s awesome that James Hong was in this movie, but In one part he’s forced to eat one of his own snot. The moment just felt full-blown insulting. We get quite a bit of solid martial arts action in this movie, but the plot sadly revolves around the idea that pretty much everything is okay because nothing matters. Even with a small nod to “kindness” mattering, “kindness” is portrayed as acceptance and absence of morality rather than real “truth” or actual kindness with the benefit of the other person in mind. The film seems to allow you to have your opinions as long as they can be fit into the nice little box of accepting everything. Unfortunately, the “everything” in this movie means murder, sexual perversions, extremely egregious disgusting behavior, and pretty much anything else under the sun.

On top of all this, we get a pretty bad score with about the worst pacing of any movie I have seen this year. The film definitely lives up to its name. In the process, the execution is so convoluted and rapid-fire you pretty much miss or just get split seconds of large sections of this thing, but it still feels ridiculously long and even seems to end once, the just continues on and on after that. I have seen 3-and-a-half-hour movies that feel shorter than this just over 2-hour movie. We also get a pretty bad and unsatisfying ending given the scale and setup of the actual story.

As much as I love the talents involved, elements of this film fall very much into the “depraved and creepy zone” which steals from any real joy or heartfelt "anything" this film had to offer. If the sheer amount of philosophical garbage in this flick could take physical form, it would fill a football stadium (and I love a lot of philosophical movies).

Overall I have to give this thing a 0 out of 7. When you take a concept this awesome and turn it into perverted sexualized vomit, I can’t get behind it in the least bit. Other rated R films have pulled off this kind of crazy in far better ways.
