COSMOS (2021)

COSMOS (2021)

Tagline: Nope

(Sci-Fi, Western, Quick Draw) [Short]

Note – There was no MPAA rating for this movie, but it would likely have been a G or PG.

In this one, Jane Montana is trying to rescue a woman in the middle of the desert. After a brief shootout, there are questions as to just how many bullets are left in her gun? Is it 3, is it 5, is it 2? It’s actually 2 and the issue now is that she’s got three bad guys left to take down.

First off, this freakin film is less than 7 minutes long and it still manages to get a complete story in. Yeah – for you short film scriptwriters out there, do not tell me it can’t be done. I’ve written complete stories for DARK 30 in 6 pages.

Acting-wise the main star in this is Jane Montana played by La Trice Harper. She is probably best known for being in the TV show “This Is Us”. Jeremy John Wells plays “Buford”, the smartest of the bad guys. As of this review, he has 35 acting credits but hasn’t been in anything I have heard of. He is actually quite good in this. I don’t want to give too much away about her character, but Alysia Juniel is also pretty solid in this for the few scenes she’s in. Overall the acting is pitch-perfect and I thought this cast was fantastic.

When THE TWILIGHT ZONE first came out they featured a lot of stories with twists and turns and usually some sort of moral at the end. Some of the stories were pretty dark while others were whimsical and really fun to watch. COSMO has a fun little twist at the end that gives this thing a delightful amount of charm I very rarely ever see on DUST. DUST is a streaming channel that focuses mostly on thought-provoking science fiction content. When you read that “thought-provoking” part, that has the idea of “this stuff ranges from interesting to, wow, everything sucks”. DUST does have some “fun” films, but this one is actually really charming and I just loved it.

Because this is Western Sci-Fi the minimal effects work and the score is pretty solid fading and then coming right back just at the right times. The production is adequate, but there really wasn’t a call for anything over the top anyway.

This is the only film that Thomas Thomas has done to date and he knocks it out of the park. I don’t have a lot of “shorts” reviews out there just yet, but this is the most fun and cool one I’ve seen thus far.

I have to give this a 7 out of 7 and I have already added it to a streaming playlist to watch it in the future.
