YOR: THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE (1983)

YOR: THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE (1983)

Tagline: He was a powerful warrior from the future, trapped in a prehistoric land, battling for the survival of his people.

(Action, Adventure, Fantasy) [PG]

Note – the other tagline for this movie is nuts. I am posting it merely because it’s so freakin long for a tagline that it almost boggles the mind.

Alternate Tagline: He is from a future world. Trapped in prehistoric times. Searching for his past. A hunter of incredible power and strength. In his quest for his origin, he and the woman he loves must fight hostile tribes. Battle deadly beasts. And try to survive the violent forces of a newly born Earth.

First off that tagline pretty much gives you the entire storyline. Oddly, we don’t find out this guy is from a future world until halfway through the movie. We don’t see the main villain until there are about 20 minutes to go. I say “a future world” because he’s technically not from the future. That is all I will give away here. Not as if the alternate tagline didn’t already give you enough to just draw your own conclusions. This movie is like watching CONAN THE BARBARIAN and a less polished STAR WARS at the same time.

Acting-wise the main heroine in the movie is Kalaa (played by Corinne Cléry who has done few English-speaking films but is still active to this day). Kalaa is mostly known for her jealousy in the movie, so her heroism might be a bit from just trying to survive. She even tries to kill a rival in the film, so you know, just keep that one eye open dude. Yor is played by Reb Brown and while he isn’t a built as some other 80’s action stars, he isn’t completely weak-looking either. He has starred in 61 different films and shows but seems to have gotten out of acting around 2016. The movie's main villain is just called “The Overlord” and he is played by the versatile John Steiner. Steiner might be best known for playing Jafar in the movie SINBAD OF THE SEVEN SEAS. One of the other female roles with more than a few sentences is played by Carole André who portrays Ena. I will say that at least Ena was a bit more able to fight than even Kalaa but just had a ton less screen time. No one in this movie was ever going to get an Oscar for it, but this is far from the worst acting I have seen in a movie even this month.

Regarding the soundtrack and score, they are both pretty fun. The opening song is basically a rock ode to Yor that is almost gut-bustingly hilarious.

To wrap this one up all I can say is we get a few dinosaurs and a hilarious flying creature hang gliding scene that is just so fun I was almost giddy just watching this thing. There is a lot of silly goofiness to be had out there, but this movie is actually bizarrely a lot more fun to watch than it has any right to be. I would love to check this out again and may even buy this movie just to brighten my day if I am ever just in the mood for nonsense.

If you don’t take this thing seriously it’s an absolute blast. For me, it’s a 5 out of 7, but I completely understand that this won’t be everyone’s prehistoric movie with stormtroopers and freakin lasers. You read that right, "stormtroopers".
