TREMORS 3: BACK TO PERFECTION (2001)

TREMORS 3: BACK TO PERFECTION (2001)

Tagline: The Food Chain Just Grew Another Link.

(Horror, Action, Comedy) [PG]

Need I remind you Jack? They are not your friends, they are government agents. OVER!

In this one, Burt Gummer has returned to Perfection, Nevada after becoming a bit of a celebrity for his ability to eradicate graboids. He finds out the town has embraced the events of the attack years earlier and now it’s a tourist trap for graboid enthusiasts.  There is literally a tour where they fake graboid appearances and they have comics and all that stuff. While Gummer is there however the town faces another graboid attack bigger than anything they have seen before. The town is ready to take on the threat itself, but an environmental group shows up and convinces them to try and capture one alive. This is a huge mistake…

Acting-wise in this one, we get a return of Michael Gross (played by Burt Gummer) who was one of the main characters in the first 2 films. Ariana Richards (best known for JURASSIC PARK) is also back for this one after appearing in the original as does Tony Genaro as Miguel and Charlotte Stewart who reprises her role as Nancy Sterngood. I did like the new additions to the cast which included Susan Chuang who is currently starring in the new Magnum P.I. TV show. Shawn Christian (who is best known for Days Of Our Lives) is also pretty solid in this.

Some great points about this one include the fun script and little injections of humor. I love the wit in this one and actually think the writing was light years better than the second installment. The action sequences are also pretty great. They even through a bit of a love story in this helps give this movie at least 2 layers of depth. It even contains the crazy fact that Burt has a bunker under his house that you could stay in for 7 years as long as you ate the proper rations of food.

Where this movie kind of drops the ball, was in the graboid effects in some scenes. The CGI is pretty bad and I really wish they had gone with all practical effects like they did in the original. I am not crazy about the new stage of graboid introduced in this film, but mostly because of the design and the name Jodi gives it. It is fitting that it was her though. Her uncle Walter coined the term “graboids” in the first film. This is the only movie in the series rated PG. The rest are all PG-13.

Overall this movie is pretty fun and the characters I found were more likable than in either of the first 2 movies. Unfortunately, the storyline is almost too basic and the CGI really wasn’t up to the task in this film.

I have to give it a 4 out of 7, but it is slightly better than the 2nd movie. This is a b-movie so walk into it expecting that and you should have a great time.
