JURASSIC PARK III (2001)

JURASSIC PARK III (2001)

Tagline: Their World. Their Rules.

(Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi) [PG-13]

With the best intentions? Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions. You know what, Billy? As far as I'm concerned, you're no better than the people that built this place.

In this one a seemingly rich couple talks Dr. Alan Grant (again played by Sam Neill) into going back to Jurassic Park islands, to show them the area (which still has plenty of dinosaurs). They are willing to pay a high price to have him do it and he agrees (apparently without checking into who they are or any of that stuff). Once there, Grant finds out they are not what they seem and are not there for the reasons he thought. It doesn’t take long before the screaming starts things start to get really out of control…

I think out of all the Jurassic Park movies this one might be my least favorite. One issue I had with it is how dumb they make Dr. Alan Grant. He seems like a dude that would have at least looked this guy up on the internet or something, even back in 2001. My second issue is Paul Kirby’s duplicity. It’s almost annoyingly distracting. I would rather they gave William H. Macy a more even-keeled character. I also understand that at the time Téa Leoni  (who plays Amanda Kirby) was in the prime of her career, but I didn’t like what they gave her to work with either. For both of the Kirby’s, I was just kind of rooting for them to get eaten. Also, Billy, this movie could have done without him also. If I am a dinosaur, I am just finding all 3 of these characters and biting the crap out of them.

What I did like about the movie is that they gave Eric (the Kirby’s son) some incredible survival skills and I liked some of the action sequences quite a bit. The Spinosaurus which took the main stage among the dinosaurs was an awesome-looking creation and the effects were still top notch overall. I also loved that we got the iconic score that we got and the cinematography was also pretty good in most of the movie. The finale was also very strong.

This was the only JURASSIC PARK movie of the first 3 that didn’t have a book to go with it. Even Michael Crichton couldn’t come up with an idea after working with the writers. So the script was mostly done without him and ended up using a few parts of the original book that didn’t end up in the first 2 movies.

I have to give this one a 4 out of 7, but it’s a weaker 4 out of 7 than THE LOST WORLD. Unlike that movie, this one is almost humorless and I don’t understand bringing someone like Laura Dern onto your project and only giving her 4 lines and like 2 minutes of screen time.
