DOLLMAN (1991)

DOLLMAN (1991)

Tagline: He's the toughest cop on the planet Arturus -- but on earth, he's in over his head!

(Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy) [R]

And take off those sunglasses... it's night!

In this one, a cop named Brick Bardo from outer space ends up being forced to crash land on earth. On his home planet, he is a regular size, but on earth, he is 13 inches tall and he’s got a bad attitude. It turns out his arch-enemy (who is also tiny now) from his how planet also landed on earth and is determined to use a weapon on his ship to dominate the earth. Brick winds up befriending a woman named Debi who is trying to rid her neighborhood of the gang Brick’s enemy is trying to use to serve his purposes.

First off this movie is super low budget. If you ever watch a FULL MOON ENTERTAINMENT movie you pretty much know what you are getting. Sometimes these movies overachieve like some of the entries in the PUPPET MASTER series. This is one of those movies that overachieve. It’s actually bizarrely good and pretty fun overall.

When you can take several clips of other movies and kind of rehash them into your movie, you run the risk of things going badly. Especially when you are portraying the South Bronx with footage that isn’t the South Bronx. While this film gets a lot of complaints, it’s actually got several things going for it. We don’t really see that many movies with super small characters and still get good acting on top of that. Brick is played by Tim Thomerson who has a appeared in tons of movies and even been on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. The guy can act and he plays this role perfectly. Debi is played by Kamala Lopez who has also had a ton of roles. Both are still active in film to this day.

The sci-fi element of this movie is interesting, (the villain is just a mangled head) but the fact that the ships are clearly toys is comical. I wasn’t really down with the overuse of profanity in this movie. It seems like a lot of writers was only given about 14 words they were allowed to use for the entire script and couldn’t stop tossing the granddaddy of them all around every 5 seconds. In one instance the “f” word is used 11 times in 4 sentences. Actually, depending on who you ask, the granddaddy of them all might be the “c” word. Anyway, it was overkill.

Even with all of its issues, there is enough here for me to have wished they had made multiple movies in a series with this character. We do see DOLLMAN again in DOLLMAN VS DEMONIC TOYS, but the premise of that movie didn’t intrigue me at all. I hate demonic crap unless the entire movie is just demons getting stomped.

Overall this movie is a 5 out of 7. I would definitely watch it again. When you look at this thing in a field of b-movies that goes on forever and ever, this would be in the top half of those.
