SEASON 2 EPISODE 10 – NIGHT TERRORS

In this one, the mystery machine gets damaged in an avalanche while Shaggy, Scooby, Daphne, Velma, and Fred, so they end up having to stay at the Burlington Mansion in the middle of nowhere. Once there the caretaker (who hates the cold) gives the gang a tour and they find out the owners of the mansion are obsessed with groups of 4 that hang out with 1 animal…just like Scooby-Doo and the gang (one of them is called “The Benevolent Lodge Of Mystery”. It doesn’t take long before they all start seeing things. Can they solve the mystery before their hallucinations destroy them all?

This episode gives nods to THE SHINING, VACATION, and even CLASH OF THE TITANS. In fact, we’ve seen the family that showed up at the beginning of the episode before, back in Episode 2. The artwork is extremely solid as well as the pacing and story. There is nothing mind-blowing going on here, but the creature concepts are pretty fun and cool. There are some events that feel extremely odd in this one even though the gang wasn’t themselves when it happened…but wow… I didn’t expect that.

Fact – Scooby-Doo can sniff out gas and fluid leaks in the Mystery Machine.

Second Fact – Shaggy can’t fall asleep without Scooby-Doo reading him a bedtime story. At least according to this episode.

Oddity – The cook at this mansion has bad aim. He misses hitting Scooby-Doo with a turkey from about 4 feet away.

Best Line – Learning isn’t lame…it’s evil! – girl in the opening clip.

Second Best Line – Now that we’re all back to a state of total denial, can we talk about the clues? – Velma

This isn’t the best episode out there, but I liked the execution and the creature designs. This is another step up from some of the early episodes this season. I give this one a 5 out of 7, but almost wish this episode had been an hour long. There was a lot going on.
