SCOOBY-DOO! CAMP SCARE (2010)

SCOOBY-DOO! CAMP SCARE (2010)

(Animation, Adventure, Comedy) [G]

This movie was not given a rating so I just threw a G on it. There are some creatures in here, but no cursing, nudity, or any of that jazz.

I am not big on the SCOOBY-DOO! series that have come out since SCOOBY-DOO!MYSTERY INCORPORATED. so going back and watching some of the other stuff can be hit and miss. This one got high praise online and I am guessing part of that is due to the nostalgia. It’s already Scooby-Doo! which is awesome but this movie has all the hallmarks of what made SCOOBY-DOO! great. It’s also based on scary stories in and around a campground that looks like something right out of my childhood.

In this one, the gang is trying to relive some of Fred’s old summer camp memories by going back to the one he visited when he was a kid. Once they get there of course they find out a Woodsman has been axing up the place and the camp is on the verge of being canceled. With the help of some kids that arrived at the camp late, Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred, and Thelma are going to investigate what’s really going on. Of course, that isn’t the only mystery in the area, they also need to outwit a lake creature known as The Fisherman and The Banshee Of Black Canyon. Who or what is behind all this and why are they trying to get Camp Little Moose to close?

First off the opening song for this thing just gets the viewer right into the swing of the movie. The opening scare is also pretty fantastic. One thing that really stands out in this movie is the artwork. Normally with the show, you get a lot of flat easy to reproduce textures, but not a ton of detail. This movie doesn’t have that issue. It looks fantastic. I will say I wasn’t crazy about the character designs, but they are far from the worst I have seen. The worst Scooby-Doo! designs are in the TV series BE COOL, SCOOBY-DOO! just in case you were wondering. I mean, damn those characters are horrible looking.

Anyway, I really loved the voice crew on this as well. It’s the same crew we got on SCOOBY-DOO! MYSTERY INCORPORATED. Matthew Lillard is the perfect Shaggy (this is actually the first animated movie he did as Shaggy), Fred Welker of course is the best Fred and best Scooby-Doo. We also get amazing voice work from Mindy Cohn as Velma and Grey Griffin is always epic as Daphne.

Dialog-wise and story-wise this freaking thing is solid as heck. It’s both a blast and it does a great job covering the bases any fan would want in a Scooby-Doo story. The Woodsman’s back story seems to be loosely based on the campfire story “Legend Of Cropsy”. It’s a bit of a love letter to 80’s horror but meant to be for both kids and adults. We also get introduced to a couple of cool characters named Trudy (voiced by Tara Strong) and Luke (voiced by Scott Menville). Trudy is like a mini Velma which is pretty rad and Luke is like a mini Fred. As far as I can tell, this is sadly the only appearance of these two characters anywhere in the Scooby-Doo universe. We also get a brief role for Mark Hamill (as the Deacon) that kind of looks like a watered-down Crypt Keeper.

Tidbit – Scooby actually has a scene where he drives the Mystery Machine in this movie. It might come as a bit of a shock, but this isn’t the only time we have seen him drive something. Scooby was also able to drive a forklift in the SCOOBY-DOO! MYSTERY INCORPORATED Season 1 Episode 10 – Howl Of The FrightHound. He also drives a tank in Season 2 Episode 1.

Overall I have to give this one a 7 out of 7. I am not sure what else a Scooby-Doo! fan could ask for, especially if you grew up on the original series like I did.
