SON OF GODZILLA (1967)

SON OF GODZILLA (1967)

(Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure) [PG]

Not sure exactly how this damn thing got a PG rating when some of the other “less kid-friendly” Godzilla movies were rated G.

In this movie, some scientists go to an island to experiment on creating changes to the weather. On the same island is some chick they almost killed and of course Godzilla and his son who constantly have to fight off giant insects. That’s all, nothing more to see here.

The positives are that the designs on the giant spider and mantis kaiju are pretty cool. It’s also the first movie in the Showa Era (1954-1975) that portrayed the main actress in the movie from a position of strength. Riko (played by Beverly Maeda who was still acting as of 2017) in this movie is both smart and confident most of the way through. She even survives both super cold and superheat experiments happening on this island.

Everything else about this freakin movie sucks. The Godzilla design is rough, not horrible, but rough. The Son of Godzilla looks just really freaky and lame. He sounds like a donkey most of the time. I guess it’s not quite as bad as him straight up talking like in REVENGE OF GODZILLA, but it’s pretty terrible. The soundtrack makes you feel like you are in the middle of an early 1900’s carnival. The dialog is maddeningly terrible even compared to some of the worst Godzilla flicks. Everyone looks like they are spending half their time running around in the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, but were also forced to wear Santa coats some of the time? It’s all pretty wonky. I guess the Santa outfits kind of make sense since this movie was aimed at kids and it came out in December, but wow…just what the actual crap.

I am not sure which movie I dislike more, this one or REVENGE OF GODZILLA, but both are bottom of the barrel when it comes to Godzilla flicks for me. I wish I could find more good things to say about this. I guess the ending is okay? Cinematically almost nothing about this is impressive. A lot like GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER, almost all of this movie happens on an island, but they manage to keep it as dull as possible.

As a Godzilla fan, it’s hard to really hate on any of these movies, but this thing is a disaster. I can only give it a 2 out of 7, only because Godzilla by himself can bring almost any movie up to a 2.
