SEVEN MINUTES IN HEAVEN (1985)

SEVEN MINUTES IN HEAVEN (1985)

Tagline : The tagline sucked so I am not typing that.

(Comedy, Drama, Romance) [PG-13]

I can’t seem to get away from that lady, I thought she lived in Pittsburgh….

In this one this chic named Natalie (played by Jennifer Connelly from ALITA : BATTLE ANGEL and she was also the voice of Karen-Spider-Man’s suit in SPIDER-MAN : HOMECOMING) is staying at home while her father is away to work on an essay which is intended to help her meet the President. Her friend Jeffrey (played by Byron Thames) is a friend who is having issues with his mom and jerk of a stepfather, so Natalie is letting him stay at the house. Natalie’s friend Polly meets a professional baseball player who she tells she is 18 (she’s actually 15), and basically falls in love with him after making out. Now that Natalie is left to her own devices, is falling for a “player” from her school, and Polly is sort of jealous of her, craziness ensues.

There are a few interesting things about this movie that remind me of growing up in the 80’s. One thing is that Jeffrey’s mom is totally fine with him literally living at Natalie’s house with her dad gone. It sounds weird, but in the 80’s a lot of crazy stuff like this was going on. The parenting style overall in this, is pretty damn spot on, or was for a lot of us. We also get several shots of older tube style TV’s playing MTV. Also a lot of the décor and even the phones brought me back nostalgia wise.

One interesting directing choice in this movie is that at several points Polly is thinking to herself, and we hear some of her jealousy coming out. In other sequences Natalie is acting out in her head at times as a way of showing she isn’t perfect. The acting in some ways is strong especially during the sequences between Jennifer Connelly and Maddie Corman (who plays Polly most known for SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL). In other ways the acting is pretty rough. Alan Boyce who seemed to stop acting in 1997 is pretty bad in this, and Billy Wirth (Dwayne from LOST BOYS) is just okay. Not trying to give these guys a hard time, they just looked dis-interested in this thing.

There are a lot of movies out there where you’ve got teen-angst, this one goes at bit more into the sexual discovery and conversation than others, but it’s not complete overkill for the target audience. There are some heartfelt moments in this movie which kind of put a bow on it, and it actually does feel like it ends at a good spot.

For me this one gets a 4 out of 7. It wouldn’t be my normal fare, but it’s not terrible by any means.
