INVASION U.S.A. (1985)
Tagline: No one thought it could ever happen here...
(Action, Thriller) [R]
If you come back in here, I am gonna hit you with so many rights you are going to beg for a left.
I vaguely remember watching this movie as a kid, because my dad had like zero concern when it came to my brother and I watching R rated flicks. The most memorable scene for me was when the main bad guy Mikhail Rostov (played by Richard Lynch who has about half a million acting credits), jammed this lady's face into a tube she was sniffing cocaine with. I never thought about doing drugs, but that scene definitely stuck in my head as a back-up-warning that it was a freakin terrible idea.
In this one, Mikhail Rostov is invading the U.S. with a huge terrorist organization with 20 to 40 large boats full of hundreds maybe even a thousand terrorists who just want to jack up the United States because we don’t appreciate our freedom and we are soft like the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man. Matt Hunter (played by Chuck Freakin Norris), is just minding his own business in Florida when Rostov tries to have him killed. These two go way back to when Hunter was in the CIA. Anyway, that is about all it takes to make Matt Hunter pissed and now he’s taking it out on every terrorist he sees. Meanwhile, there is a reporter named Dahlia McGuire following Hunter around so that he has someone to tell him he's crazy and call him names n' stuff. Can Hunter stop all these scum from destroying the United States or will they succeed because we are super soft?
Acting-wise this thing has it's good and bad. McGuire is played by Melissa Prophet who is famous for being in CASINO and GOODFELLAS. She stopped acting in 1995 but is now Executive Director of Development of The Robert Evans Company, Paramount Pictures. In this she’s decent but you can tell she was shoved into the plot because there really isn’t a reason for anyone but Chuck Norris and Richard Lynch to be in this movie to drive the plot. Lynch is also really good and you pretty much can’t stand this dude a few seconds after he first arrives on screen. Chuck Norris is good but not great in this and does most of his own stunts, which is pretty awesome.
Plot-wise there isn’t too much going on here. It’s basically a movie with very little important dialog and just a ton of action scenes piled on top of one another. Cinematically there is nothing special going on here, but some of the scenes are particularly brutal and even sad. There is also a pretty decent sequence that happens in a mall that I liked quite a bit.
If you like big dumb action movies where no one is aiming their weapon and every bullet miraculously misses the good guy then this one is for you. This is one of those movies that somehow works, but not many want to admit they liked it. Until 2007 is was MGM’s second highest-selling video release. Yeah – this freakin thing!
I have to give this movie a 4 out of 7. It’s not going to blow minds, but as stated earlier some of the scenes in this put this one into the “memorable” category unlike a lot of the action flicks of its day. It’s also one of the few notable movies aside from RED DAWN where the United States is being invaded by a formidable foreign enemy.
