SANTA JAWS (2018)

SANTA JAWS (2018)

So at this point I have written 17 shark movie reviews and at some point you have to start finding the stuff that not many people are looking for. I think I was able to get to that point with this action adventure comedy out of Active Entertainment.

In this one a mostly disgruntled teen named Cody (played by Reid Miller who actually seems to have a lot of talent) ends up super pissed at his mom and dad for grounding him. He’s going to miss a big comic book event and decides that he is going to wish his comic book creation SANTA JAWS kills everyone he doesn’t like. He’s basically just mad not murderous, but after being given a magic pen to draw with, everything goes freakin bonkers. Now Santa Jaws is real and is swimming in the bay right in their neighborhood devouring Cody’s family members. He enlists the help of his friend and co-comic creator Steve and his neighbor Jena, (played by Courtney Lauren famous for The Vampire Diaries) who he has a crush on.

Overall this movie isn’t doing anything mind blowing in the directing department. In fact, this thing falls pretty flat cinematically, but the effects team does do a great job on the shark in certain moments. Underwater shots are kinda goofy as heck, but the above water shots are serviceable and don’t hurt this movie at all. Given that it’s a comedy of sorts just by way of the title it doesn’t have a lot of comedic writing. Instead this movie is actually pretty heartfelt and clever and given its premise, it’s all oddly satisfying.

For me this wouldn’t be a Christmas movie even though it happens around that time and it is about a Santa Jaws, but as a cool shark comedy in an ocean of shark flicks, this is by far one of the more creative ones. Hats off to writer Jake Kierman who ought keep exploring his ideas. The acting is pretty good and I had no issues with this thing regarding that. Cody’s character does get annoying at times, but as a teen boy whose going what he’s going through, it’s pretty spot on.

This is a movie I would watch again and it’s done by the same studio as SWAMP SHARK so maybe someday there will be a combo-pack BLU-RAY with those two flicks in it. For now, I have to give this thing a 5 out of 7. I found myself enjoying it far more than I had a right to.
