COWBOYS VS DINOSAURS (2015)
Tagline : Let the best species win!
This is one of those movies you would think The Asylum would have come up with. Instead Pixium Film group came up with it. For me this kind of came across as a movie that might have been a comic book at some point. There is a book out there called “Rex Riders” with a similar idea but the cowboys are more Old-West. There is also the movie THE VALLEY OF GWANGI from 1969 that might have prompted this idea as well. In any case here we are, and it is time to get on this this review.
In this one a team of miners dig and blast into a cavern in Livingston, Montana. The scenery in this movie is actually pretty epic, but anyway, it doesn’t’ take long before raptors are coming out of this cavern and just eating everyone they can find. That is pretty much it. For some reason one of the town’s residents (played by Kelcey Watson who is no stranger to dinosaur flicks after staring in POSEIDEON REX and JURASSIC CITY) owns enough guns to take on an entire army and that is the dude whose weapons get used the most in this. On second thought, owning 500 something guns might be normal for guys named “Quaid” in Montana.
The CGI in this thing is off and on. There are certain shots where the raptors and the T-Rex look fine, and others where they look goofy as heck. The storyline does give us a lot of Val and Sky background, but it feels really disconnected from the rest of this plot and Val isn’t really that likable. In fact, I kinda wanted Val to get eaten by some form of CGI Mayhem. The dialog is also pretty weak in most of this movie.
We do actually have two leads that can act. Rib Hillis (who has been in a ton of stuff, but had an ongoing role in Port Charles the TV series as Dr. Jake Marshak) plays the lead Val Walker who is really just there to look good and get the job done. We also get a heavy dose of Casey Fitzgerald as Sky. She can also act and has zero issue doing it acting like there are a ton of CGI dinosaurs chasing her. B-movie frequent flyer Sara Malakul Lane (who plays Dr. Sinclair) is also in this but isn’t given very much to do except resist the big wigs at the mining operation and try to avoid getting eaten by a T-Rex. Outside of Kelcey Watson who is pretty fun in this, almost everybody else seems to be just there for the low low paycheck and maybe a box of half eaten pizza. Even Eric Roberts who plays Val’s dad and has quite a few lines in this, looks un-amused with this production. So if you see some reviews saying the acting was bad, I have to disagree, for a b-movie it’s decent.
Given some of the issues with this movie, I can see why some people just flat out hated it and why it ended up on some German TV show featuring the worst movies of all time, but that is only because the people doing that crap have not seen the bottom of the barrel. I’ve seen it and this isn’t it. COWBOYS VS DINOSAURS is actually pretty fun to laugh at and is somewhat enjoyable given the premise. That is a LOT more than I can say for a lot of crap I watch.
This movie gets a 3 out of 7 from me.
