GAMMERA THE INVINCIBLE (1966)

GAMMERA THE INVINCIBLE (1966)

Tagline - Can Plan "Z" Stop [Gammera the Invincible]

I find the tagline funny because it almost immediately tells you “Plan z” will not work. Otherwise, Gammera isn’t invincible.

In this one, the military drops an atomic bomb at the North Pole. Because they are just really pissed at Santa and they’ve just finally had it. Just kidding about the Santa part, not the nuclear bomb part. This sets a 200-foot giant monster turtle loose from an icy grave and now he’s gonna blow some crap up with his fire breathe. Gammera is also nice to kids for some damn reason but hates it when he sees adults and lighthouses. The movie indicates that Gammera gets his energy from nuclear power. He can also fly like a spinning flying saucer and eats fire. Pretty freakin awesome.

One fantastic part of the American dubbed version is that it features an argument with two intellectuals on a TV show. Both are smoking, which would be almost unheard of these days, but they also get into a full-blown argument trading insults. It’s so out of place in the movie that it’s both comical and amazing at the same time. This movie also has a hilarious dancing scene where the participants in the dance just decide to keep going once Gammera shows up to destroy everything. They are also dancing to a band singing a song about Gammera. Oh man, you have got to love it.

The acting in this movie is pretty great and for its time the effects are pretty good given the era. The pace of the movie is just about perfect and we get a lot of Gammera shots. There are a few things that are unique about this particular movie in the series. 1) It is the only black and white movie in the series. 2) It is also the only movie in the series where Gammera is spelled with 2 m’s in the movies title. Every other time Gamera is mentioned, we just get the 1 “m”.

This is one of those movies that just gets better and better as it moves along and it’s a total blast to watch. Gammera doesn’t fight another creature in this movie, but it’s just great all around. This one gets a 6 out of 7 from me. It’s an almost perfect 60’s era Kaiju film. The black and white actually adds a LOT to the look of this film overall.
