SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (2012)
This all must be difficult for you. I too lost my mother when I was a young girl. I can never take your mother's place, ever. But I feel that you and I are bound. I feel it there, your heart.
I remember when this came out. I was super excited to see it just based on the previews. In spite of the fact that Kristen Stewart (who plays Snow White in this) had a terrible reputation as an actress following the TWILIGHT series, I didn’t have a disposition against her. I remembered how good she was going all the way back to PANIC ROOM and was going to give her another chance. Already a huge fan of Chris Hemsworth (who plays the Huntsman) I figured there wasn’t much to lose.
I was right. Almost from top to bottom this movie is just freakin superb. There is an amazing contrast from dark to light and some of the ideas in this thing are just really out-of-the-box cool.
The movie is about Snow White, who gets thrown into a grungy room by an evil queen named Ravenna (played by Charlize Theron). Ravenna is immortal mostly because she just sucks the life right out of every young girl she runs across. The evil queen hires a local huntsman to get Snow White back after she escapes. I mean damn, we can't have Snow White just running around singing to birds and all that crap. I won’t give too much away after that in case you haven’t seen it, but man on man is this thing just awesome.
Sadly this movie was the last role for the legendary actor Bob Hoskins (who played Muir). However, the cast overall is really good and really committed to giving us this world. I loved the retelling of this classic tale and Theron’s role as Rivenna was haunting. The sets are also incredible including a huge castle in an enchanted forest, which actually took six months to construct. There is a lot of CGI in this thing, but it’s really well done. I guess the movie did get some complaints for not using actual dwarfs but rather effects to make the actors look shorter. I didn’t hear about this till well after the movie had come and gone in the theaters. This also wasn’t the only movie to come out in 2012, that had to do with Snow White. There was another movie called MIRROR MIRROR that came out also, but that movie just didn’t grab my attention.
My only complaint about this movie is the fact that as good as Kristen Stewart did, she wasn’t someone even in this movie that would have been considered “the fairest of them all”. Maybe that’s a personal choice for the viewer, but typically if you are doing a Snow White movie, you don’t want the actress playing Snow White to be outdone by anyone in the movie.
Overall this film is a bit of excellent filmmaking and storytelling. You can tell the producers took a ton of time with it. For me, this is a solid 6 out of 7. I could have done with a little less dialog than we get, but I do own this movie and I do get excited about it when I think about watching it. This thing is really well done and really fun.
