KIM POSSIBLE : SEASON 1 EPISODE 5 – DOWNHILL (2002)
In this one Kim and Ron are headed to ski-school for a
Middleton High School ski trip with Kim’s parents in tow as chaperons. Ron decides
to try and get a picture of the snow beast of Mt. Middleton he read about on
the way there. Instead they run into a mad-scientist known as DNAmy. The 6th villain introduced in the
series. Bonnie also plays a pretty big and annoying role in this episode.
DNAmy (voiced by Melissa McCarthy from Ghostbusters) is
mixing genetics to make real life size plush toys. We’ve got a rhino bunny, a
human pig, a snake cat and a human chicken going on here. It’s all pretty nuts
and pretty fantastic. She is also the only villain so far besides Shego to
refer to Kim Possible as “Kimmy”. I am guessing the creators were not crazy
about the character, because she only appears in 3 episodes in the entire
series. I would have loved to have had a crack at some of the ideas that could
have come with a character like DNAmy, over several more episodes than that. To
be clear though DNAmy herself is a bottom tier character, it’s what she could
do as a geneticist that would have been interesting to see if they had gone
more in that direction.
Animation wise this episode is a step up from the first 4.
The snow backgrounds on the ski mountain are better detailed than much of the
backgrounds in other episodes. They do seem to skimp on a few of the details in
the plush toys DNAmy is collecting, but that may be because she had several
hundred and it would have just been a ton to draw on a deadline. The humor and
storyboard angles are also better in this one that in some of the other
episodes.
The best thing about this one is that is the first time the
series puts emotion into it that is heartfelt and identifiable. In this case it
has to do with Kim and her parents.
Best Line – “Just once I wish the bad guy’s lair didn’t have
to blow up” – Kim Possible
Overall I give this one a 7 out of 7. Even after watching
the entire series it’s still in my top 20 episodes.
