KIM POSSIBLE : SEASON 1 EPISODE 1 – CRUSH (2002)

KIM POSSIBLE : SEASON 1 EPISODE 1 – CRUSH (2002)

In this one Kim Possible (voiced by Christy Carlson Romano) meets Rufus (voiced by Nancy Cartwright who also voices Bart Simpson) for the first time and isn’t crazy about him because he’s a naked mole rat. We also get introduced to her side-kick Ron Stoppable (voiced by Will Friedle). Kim has a crush on a guy at school, but there is no time for that now because Dr. Drakken (voiced by John Dimaggio) is busy trying to take over the world with his side-kick. Well she’s actually more the brains behind the operation, and her name is Shego (voiced by Nicole Sullivan). Shego is one of the coolest animated villains of all time with a fantastic green and black suit, witty sarcasm and hands that light up with a green glow and can blast you to smithereens . We also get introduced to Wade Load (played by Tahj Mowry) who is a computer genius who ends up saving the day almost as much as Kim, Ron and Rufus do. Wayne is a lot like the really really smart side of Batman in the DC universe. His name likely refers to his weight “wide load” but that is never mentioned. Kim Possible came out in a less PC environment than we have today and I kind of love that about this thing. It didn’t pander to anyone…well not right away.
This episode kind of indicates that Ron is ridiculously un-popular and that Kim is, but she’s got some enemies on her own cheer squad. The main girl who is a jerk to her throughout the series is Bonnie Rockwaller (voiced by Kirsten Storms).

Kim and Ron mostly get around by getting rides all over the world via people that Kim has helped or saved at some point. Kim and Ron are essentially teen 007’s fighting various villains throughout the series. Unlike a lot of other shows with these types of heroes, they are not tied to or affiliated with any other group. Because they are who they are, they develop a “Spider-Man” like list of antagonists. Dr. Drakken being the first and by far most re-visited (he literally shows up in 53 different episodes). Dr. Drakken’s plan in this one involves stealing a factory to build giant robots to take over the world. It’s just pretty freakin epic. We are given the idea that both Kim and Dr. Drakken have had run-ins prior to now because they are both familiar with one another. Dr. Drakken however doesn’t remember Ron’s name and this ends up being an ongoing theme in the series.

One thing this episode does not do is explain how Kim got involved in being a teen crime fighter or how she developed her skills. So it’s very likely she just got them via osmosis or from an alien, or maybe a giant hippo with lazer eyes…we just don’t know.

Best Line – “Why did she have to be a cheerleader, if she was on the debate team, I would have vaporized her by now!” – Dr. Drakken.

Gotta give the first episode a 5 out of 7. The show has an interesting premise, but feels more like a mid-season episode rather than an introduction.
