GOLDEN EYE (1995)

GOLDEN EYE (1995)

This is the first 007 review I have ever written. I have always liked the movies, but haven’t seen them all and forgot how much humor gets injected into these things if you pay any attention to the dialog. In this one 007 and 006 are trying to foil a Russian crime groups plan to steal a weapon called “The Golden Eye”. In that effort 006 (played by Sean Bean) ends up getting left behind.

One of the Russian’s that is all about this “Golden Eye” weapon and its power is named Xenia Onatopp who is more than willing to kill just about anyone to meet her goals. It’s possible there is an actress in Hollywood that plays more full blown crazy ladies than Famke Janssen (who plays Xenia in this) but I highly freakin doubt that. Famke is violently nuts in this thing, like absolutely certifiable. The banter between James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan) and M (played by Judi Dench) is pretty great. I also really liked the small role that Robbie Coltrane played in this as Valentin Zukovsky. Seeing his as Russian is just pretty funny, and the fact that he’s a comedian makes it even more great. If you don’t recognize the name, Robbie is most famous in the US, for playing Hagrid in the Harry Potter series.

There is a lot of “women” are tough as nails moments in this movie, but it also does have  its share of “every woman that sees 007 has to sleep with him” moments which by today’s standards are probably far to sexist for some audiences. From what I remember this is pretty standard fair with the 007 movies I’ve seen. The other main protagonist in the movie is Natalya Simonova (played by Izabella Scorupco) who is a pretty solid actress. The chemistry between her and  Bond is noticeable and doesn’t feel generic.

The action sequences in this movie are extremely well done from the opening scene to the last scene. There is even an awesome part where 007 is chasing bad guys down with a tank. Having said all that the fantastic dialog and witty humor is what put this movie. I also dug the opening sequence and song “Golden Eye” by the legendary Tina Turner. You can always count on James Bond for floating and swirling opening photography and graphics.

Overall this gets a 6 out of 7 for me just for the banter and writing alone.
