WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST (1958)

WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST (1958)

Bloody hell…this movie is the ill-advised but probably completely necessary sequel to THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN.

In this one, we find out that nutty ending to THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN wasn’t the ending of Glenn Manning, just the original actor that played him. Due to that, Glenn Manning was given an intense facial deformity and for some reason they added some practical application to his shoulder, probably trying to indicate the fall caused it. The fact that we had a part 2 is only odd in the sense that we are told he was going to die due to his heart not growing fast enough in part 1. Apparently the giant shot they gave him fixed everything but his brain and size.

Due to some strange events in Mexico Glenn Manning’s, sister Joyce  decides to go there an investigate why a food truck suddenly disappeared with no food tracks to indicate where it went. The only thing more shocking than the fact that Glenn (THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN) could somehow still be alive and for some reason in Mexico, is the fact that he’s suddenly got a full grown sister after we are told in the first movie that he has no family. Writing oversights aside, the US government gets involved after catching the deformed colossal beast and immediately decide to take him back to America. Because that is what they did with all the super dangerous things in the 50’s. Needless to say things go bad when THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN is brought to America and Joyce is the only voice of reason in a crazy mixed up sci-fi B-Movie.

As bad as THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN might be, this sequel with its plot issues and constant groaning from Glenn aside is definitely more fun and intriguing. If anything about this movie stands out is how well down the practical effects on the beast were for its time. Sally Fraser (who plays Joyce Manning), she is actually trying which can not be said for the entire cast.

Apparently the studio didn’t have a ton of money to even make the movie due to the massive use of stock footage and flashbacks to the first film. On top of that, they didn’t tell anyone in the marketing that this was even part 2 to THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN. As much as I was hoping to like this the ending a lot like the ending for ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN, is pretty rough.

The best I can do is a 3 out of 7 for this one as much as I love movies with giant stuff in them.
