RIM OF THE WORLD (2019)
This is a NETFLIX movie that a lot of people are claiming
was trying to capitalize on the STRANGER THINGS phenomenon, but I didn’t get
that connection at all. It’s kind of like claiming, that if KIM POSSIBLE had
cussing, it would be a rip off of STRANGER THINGS. It’s possible some of the
downgrade in people’s opinion had to do with the fact that some thought this
was a Disney production, and came complete with all the light and fluffy dialog
and topics of a kids & family film. That isn’t the case here. So fair
warning, if you are easily offended, this is not probably a great movie for you
to watch. It’s a film that while containing PC elements, also throws punches at
anything PC whenever it gets a chance. The film’s director McG is known for
directing TERMINATOR SALVATION and WE ARE MARSHALL among others.
The movie starts out with a bunch of kids that are attending
an Adventure Camp called “Rim Of The World”. While at the camp the rest of the
world is suddenly invaded by aliens leaving just a small group of 4 kids all
trying to overcome ego’s, insecurities and immaturity to save the world. Rather
than a light and fluffy approach, RIM OF THE WORLD is a lot more “go for the
throat” in dialog and action than most movies with this many kids in lead
roles. There is a lot packed into a small amount of time in this one, everything
from criminals trying to capitalize on the lawless situation of an alien
invasion, to alien dog like creatures growing out of larger alien creatures
backs.
One of the stronger roles in this movie is played by Miya Cech as ZhenZhen. This girl is only 12 years old but has already been in a ton of projects including THE DARKEST MINDS and ARROW. Jack Gore also does a pretty decent job as Alex. This kid is only 14 at the time of me writing this, so this gives you an idea of the cast we are dealing with. While the alien designs are solid, the CGI is a bit rough in this one. Not ASYLUM rough, just Netflix didn’t have a giant budget for this rough. For a movie that ends up far from where it started RIM OF THE WORLD is a pretty under the radar rad for people that can handle something out of the box.
