TERMINATOR SALVATION - (2009)
Tagline : The End Begins
Set in post-apocalyptic
2018 (oddly close to now), John Connor is an almost prophet like figure
encouraging all remaining humans to take a stand as the resistance against Sky
Net. Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row and probably
seeing Helena Bonham Carter bald shows up and almost immediately becomes an
interest for Connor (played by Christian Bale better known as the real Batman).
We are thrown into a whirlwind of despair as Sky Net and its Terminators ravage
the earth taking some human hostages and killing those who flee.
The story goes
a thousand miles in explaining how Sky Nets Terminators are able to wear human
flesh so to speak in an ultimate attempt to wipe out mankind. Marcus (played by
Sam Worthington) does a stellar job acting out an intense inner battle between
who he is and who made him that way. Very solid performances are handed out by
Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor (who was also Gwen Stacy in SPIDERMAN 3) and
Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Serena Kogan who basically creeps us out. Setting
wise, this was the Terminator film many fans thought they were getting with
Parts 2 or 3. There are three major fight scenes in the movie including the
last one that are knock down drag out entertainment. If the film does suffer
ultimately as a letdown, it will be because of the failure to keep things
moving fast and furious for 1.75 hours like we like them. With a bit of over
writing and at least one seemingly major holes, Terminator Salvation has us
asking how Kyle Reese, Connor father is younger than Connor? Maybe they are
saving that for T5 which is apparently already in the planning stages.
Just a
couple notes, with the first of the Terminator movies to come out in (1984) I
think the franchise has done a pretty good job of cementing its place in
cinematic sci-fi history. However there is a lesson for future franchises out
there, film your movies closer together. The Terminator movie series has used 6
actors playing the role of John Connor in just 4 films. By way of comparison
the STAR WARS franchise featured just 2 Obi-Wan Kenobi’s.
I give this movie a 5
out of 7. Ultimately it’s what we all secretly wanted, but there are a few
things missing.
