STRANGER THINGS : THE POLLYWOG (2017)

If you have not done so, watch Season 1 before reading this to avoid spoilers. This season takes place in Hawkins, Indiana in 1984. Will has been rescued after his vanishing a year earlier but is starting to see visions of the Upside Down. Meanwhile the rest of the town is facing a curious rot happening to farms in the area. Just what exactly in the name of finding unknown animals in your trash is going on now?

In this episode Dustin finds a creature in his trash and he’s basically in love with it for lack of a better description. Hopper is still investigating the infection and Dr. at the lab is denying Hawkins Lab has anything to do with it. We are shown in earlier episodes that there is a deep problem with them lacking containment on the breach to the Upside Down. Nancy and Jonathon catch up after Steve and Nancy have a falling out. Eleven and Hopper kind of have an argument so she leaves the cabin to explore. I was a teenager once and  if you try to keep a teenager in a room alone most of the time it’s not going to go well.

Dustin, Lucas, Mike and Will are making some discoveries about the creature Dustin found (which Dustin named Dart). This is the main focus of the episode which fits the title, but there is a lot going on in this thing and it feels like the writers are getting warmed up on the dialog interactions between the kids. One of the major things I loved about season 1 was the writing and this is the episode this season where we start to see that taking flight. We also find out Lucas can do a drop kick when he wants to, which he uses to open doors. Will has a crazy encounter in the Upside Down that sets the course for the rest of the season.

Overall I liked this episode, but was a little bothered by how much Dustin loved this creepy looking creature found. Just felt it was a bit out of character for him at this point in the story line.
