STRANGER THINGS : THE BODY (2016)

STRANGER THINGS : THE BODY (2016)

STRANGER THINGS takes place in Hawkins, Indiana in 1983. One night on the way home from his friend’s house Will Byers suddenly disappears, and now the town’s coffee and contemplation driven Sheriff Jim Hopper, is going to try to figure out what’s behind it. Also there are forces at work only a small girl with powers can handle…so there’s that to going on here.

We pretty much knew Nancy’s boyfriend Steve (played by  Joe Keery) was a jerk from Episode 1, but this episode kinda shows his maturity level is not high. Joyce says there is a monster in the wall at her house and her son Will, is totally just alone and scared. She is going to bring him home people. As pissed as the boys (mostly Mike and Lucas) were at Eleven they now think she is the connection to Will, so yeah, she is still hiding out in Mike’s house. Now it’s time for them to sneak her into the AV club at the school so she can get a better radio signal to hear Will’s from “beyond”?

This episode gives us some “meanwhile” back at the lab moments which add to the creepy factor. Not only is something weird going on, it’s something freakin sinister. We also know from earlier episodes, they are basically listening to every phone conversation in the entire town. In flashbacks we are also shown how Eleven was trained to find (and listen to) people with her mind. Nancy tells the cops she thinks that something took her friend Barb. Hopper is getting deeper into his investigation in to what happened to Will and it’s pretty clear, he doesn’t think Will is dead.

This episode also digs a bit deeper into the fact that Mike, Lucas and Dustin are being picked on by bullies at their school. Eleven isn’t having it. We also find out Dustin probably has had to put out a few fires in his day using a fire extinguisher. The episode also is used to show how Nancy and Jonathon start to develop a trusting friendship. As much as there is going on here, overall there is a nice blend of slower moments and higher tension moments, which works nicely against the slow burn of earlier episodes. Overall I feel like this episode confirms what we probably thought was going on at the end of episode 3…only now it’s creepier because we are seeing it play out. If THE LASTSTAND taught us anything, it’s that you can’t underestimate a small town cop on a mission.

Notes : For the actors and actresses playing certain roles, check earlier reviews in the series. Also in the graphic below it says movies. Just ignore that and pretend it says “episodes”.
