GHOST IN THE SHELL (2017)

GHOST IN THE SHELL (2017)

Tagline: They did not save your life, the stole it.

Well, you can always tell movies that didn’t crush it at the box office by how cheap their DVD’s or BLU-RAY’s are just a year after the movie came out. This one I bought on DVD for $5.00 and it came with the digital copy.  When this movie came out, it got a ton of backlash in America for casting Scarlett Johansson as  Major (the main character in the film which many felt should have been Japanese). I say the backlash was pretty much centered about America, because in Japan, the movie did fine. In fact it has a higher user rating on Japan’s Yahoo site than the original anime movie did.

This one happens in the near future,  where an android human hybrid, Major Mira Killian (the first of her kind) is trained as a powerful weapon for the Ministry (the basically protect people). Now she’s tasked with stopping a new threat that is able to take over the minds of people with genetic enhancements (which in this damn movie seems to be just about everyone), to get them to kill employees of the Hanka Robotics Corporation. Meanwhile Major is also trying to sort out her past because that’s how you throw in character development to keep it interesting.

Overall this thing is just a visual feast, but some of the city scenes seem as if they were cut a bit short to keep the budget down. Granted, at one point Ghost In The Shell was considered “unfilmable” just due to the details of some of the scenes and scale depicted in the animated version (even though this plotline differs from the animated version). Acting-wise I have zero complaints about this one. Johansson plays it close to the best staying in almost “Black Widow” mode in this. Pilou Asbaek is great in this as Batou (this guy also played a few jerks in other movies. Pontius Pilot in BEN HUR and Euron Greyjoy in Game Of Thrones. Takeshi Kitano also stands out as Aramaki.

If you just look at the overwhelming amount of crying that goes on about this movie, you would think it sucked, but as a standalone movie, taking out its source material, it’s better than a lot of movies in this sci-fi wheelhouse.
