THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS (2018)
Checked this out a Harkins in Scottsdale. Based on the
previews I think I was kind of expecting an adventurous romp with crazy cool
special effects and pretty cool world building. We kinda get some of that. The story is actually not based around “The Nutrcracker” (Phillip played
by Jayden Fowora-Knight) it’s based around a key given to Clara the daughter of
a woman who basically kept The Four Realms at peace before she died. Now it’s
up to Clara because reasons. I guess the fact that Clara’s mom is no longer
alive was supposed to elicit emotions needed to make us care about her character, but I actually end up caring more about almost every other
character.
The Four Realms are basically Disney’s version of Narnia only everything in that world is based on Clara’s mom’s toys and trinkets. Two of the realms are at war and while the other 2 realms are mentioned, we see almost zero of them. Most of this damn movie is dialog driven and they even cram a bit of actual ballet into it probably for some sort of nostalgic ode to the original.
Some of the concepts are flat out creepy and well thought out. The performances all the way around, from everyone in this are just freakin superb. Mackenzie Foy, best known as Renesmee, in the TWILIGHT series definitely holds her own, but Keira Knightley as Sugar Plum steals every scene she is in. Where the issues come in, are the almost completely lifted plot (from The Chronicles Of Narnia) and the fact that they are telling us there are Four Realms but we are only introduced fully to 2. I also have issues with the idea that this movie is even called “The Nutcracker” anything, when the role is almost completely relegated to being a Jiminy Cricket, for Clara to do all the work. What does work in this movie is the solid special effects and cinematography. Overall what we get is a pretty decent family movie that could have and probably should have been a lot more.
