WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017)

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017)

In this one, Caesar and his apes are cornered into a conflict with an army of humans who just basically can’t stand apes. The army captures a bunch of Caesar’s apes and you probably know from the first 2 installments in this reboot, that Caesar is just not having that. Caesar runs into a girl named Nova after Caesar kills her father in self-defense.

WAR takes a much darker tone than RISE and DAWN almost to the point of being uncomfortable to watch. Having said that, with its title, it should have been clear this was coming. This movie takes place 15 years after the initial virus was released which led to all this (see the first 2 movies). Nova can’t speak, and slowly this affliction is reaching the rest of the human race. Overall I love the storyline in this but can’t really stand Woody Harrelson as the Colonel. I am not sure why but in certain roles Harrelson drives me nuts and in this one, he feels completely out of place. In this movie, it’s an issue for me, because he is in this thing a TON.

The ending of WAR is completely enthralling and overall the acting and effects are over-the-top excellence. While the first two films I think made maybe too much of an effort to stay realistic, this one took more risks and hit the mark just about every time. Besides Harrelson in this role, I was also disappointed to not see Ellie (played by Keri Russell) return. In this sense, the film felt a little off regarding continuity. Apparently, a 4th installment is still very much in the cards as well as a possible spin-off down the road.

Overall this is a powerful intriguing film worth your time, but don’t expect to walk out with a skip in your step.
