TEX AND THE LORD OF
THE DEEP (1985)
Based on the adventures of Tex, from the comic strip by
Bonelli, this live action attempt at a movie fails in almost every conceivable
way. This spaghetti-western/fantasy movie that blends magic , sort of, fantasy,
sort of and an ancient cult, sort of. Crap, did I already give my review away
in that first sentence?
In this one Tex is starting to get pissed because all his
friends are melting for seemingly no reason. In one scene we actually see this
happen, but the effects feel like they could have been from the 50’s, they were
so pathetic. For its entire run time it seemed, like this didn’t even come out
in the 80’s but rather a few decades earlier (cinematography wise). Anyway
after some riding around on a horse, trying to find 300 guns, and bossing
people around, Tex, determines that the killings (melting(s)), lead back to a
cult. The cult is pretty lame and bent on wiping out all of the Indians they
can find that aren’t part of their Indian cult. Yep. You read that right. The
only decent actor in this whole thing is William Berger as Kit Carson. Outside of that this thing is plagued with
terrible supporting actors and a very lax storyline where in spite of the cool
title, almost nothing happens. I get that some liked Giuliano Gemma as Tex, but
even that didn’t fix the damage done in this thing. I didn’t have the comic to compare
this too, but it would have been nice to at least see more effort put into the
casting and dialog.
As spaghetti –westerns go, this wasn’t the worst out there,
but it’s pretty freakin close. If you absolutely love Westerns, there is a lot
better fare out there than this pile of crap trying to capitalize on the
popularity of INDIANA JONES.
