SATURDAY THE 14TH (1981)

SATURDAY THE 14th (1981)

A year after Paramount released FRIDAY THE 13TH, New World Pictures decided to try and capitalize on the entire horror genre with a movie simply named SATURDAY THE 14th. One of the problems here is that it has nothing to do with FRIDAY THE 13th like the title implies. Another problem is that the movie just sucks. I know if you have seen this already it was probably when you were a kid, and you probably remember it more fondly than you should. This movie can not be described as anything more than an absolutely unfunny disaster. I do feel bad for Kari Michaelsen (who played Debbie, and who beat out Helen Hunt for a role on the “Give Me A Break” tv show) because this role wasn’t worthy of her acting skills. In fact, let’s just extend that to the entire cast.

The story revolves around a family that inherits a house that is really old and needs some serious Oxy-Clean. The younger brother finds The Book Of Evil and of course decides it’s best to open it right away. The books ends up releasing a few trick or treaters (literally that’s how bad the costumes are) and they pester the family and randomly kills at least one person. Maybe 2…I don’t know, I was barely paying attention after the first 45 minutes. Dracula isn’t down with not having the book, so the entire movie he is trying to find it, but not very hard. Eventually Van Helsing gets in on the act and that is as far as I want to go regarding the plot.

Shot on what looked like a budget of $15.00 SATURDAY THE 14TH was produced by Roger Corman’s wife and even she should have known better at the time. 99% of the movie also takes place in one location (and was literally shot in just 3 weeks). While this sometimes works (see CLUE), it definitely doesn’t work in this movie. While there are a few parts that I would consider mildly funny, I can’t recommend that anyone watch this….like ever. If you are into spoofs from that time regarding the slasher genre, STUDENT BODIES is a far superior pick (by the way, it’s not PC by any stretch of the imagination). For nostalgia reasons I guess I can give this thing a 1 out of 7.
